This revolutionary format combines pullout flash cards with flocking, mix-and-match colors, familiar animals, and a 4-piece puzzle.

With intricately designed die-cuts, flocking placement, and removable pieces, LITTLE SCHOLASTIC: ZOO is a book that thinks outside of the book.

A casebound board book with five spreads, not only does Salina Yoon's colorful art figuratively leap off the page but it can literally be pulled out of the page as well. Each spread is designed to nest a removable flash card. When all four flash cards are removed, they can be reconnected outside of the book to create a four-piece puzzle. Yoon has created a three-in-one reading experience: book, flash card, and puzzle.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
If you want a board book that seems to have it all, try this one. The cover and the inside page feature animals with a textured spot—the lion's mane, elephants ear, monkey's and panda's fur. The book has removable die-cut pieces. They are not brightly colored except for the orange lions so it seems like an odd combination when the pieces are removed and put together on the last page to end up seeing a colorful peacock. Real peacocks tend to have greenish blue feathers with almost iridescent colors. Also, the puzzle piece on the puzzle page is more blue than gray. The four puzzle pieces also serve as flash cards. However, if these items are lost, this book will lose some of its appeal. The lessons include color recognition, animal recognition and an opportunity to practice fine motor skills by putting the puzzle pieces together. An interesting idea, but not a perfect book. It tries to cover too many bases: book, flash card, and puzzle. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
