Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
AGERANGE: Ages 2 to 4.

This large, heavy book for small children tries to do too many things. Subtitled "a book of things that go," it introduces a train, a motorcycle, a truck delivering sand, and a building that grows taller when an insert in the page is lifted. Another raised panel makes corn grow because a plow on that page is tending to it. There is a page of boats and fish moving through the water; following that is a page of airplanes, hot air balloons and a dirigible. Just before the final two wrap-up pages, a spaceship goes to the stars and a little car drives around the moon. There are truck wheels that spin, substantial tabs to pull and two tactile surfaces to touch, but what will a small child learn from this book? That a fish is like a spaceship? That a building under construction moves? That a car can drive around the moon? In an effort to discuss everything that moves, with the odd exception of any living thing other than fish, the book mixes fact with fantasy and tries to explain it all with doggerel.
