What the Dead Know
by Laura Lippman
From our editors: "This stand-alone thriller from Lippman... revolves around the mysterious disappearance of two young sisters in a Baltimore County shopping mall on Easter weekend in 1975.... What the Dead Know is vintage Lippman -- emotionally charged, powerfully poignant, and hauntingly sublime. Highly recommended."

Baltimore Blues
by Laura Lippman
"The first Tess Monaghan novel was inspired by my own job insecurity -- Maryland was deep in a recession at the time I began writing it -- and my fleeting desire to kill someone," Lippman reveals on her official web site. Those new to Lippman's popular series should start here.

An Author's Approach

In an interview for The Economist in 2001, journalist Steve King observed that "reading Ms. Lippman's taut and elegantly constructed books, one has no sense that she feels in any way limited by the conventions of the genre.... 'I like writing by the rules,' she admits. 'I love detective novels and I've read them all my life... I thought I was going to be a tough, gritty dame. But when I sat down to write I realized that I'm not that type: I'm really interested in people and their relationships.'"
