In 1972, Kathleen E. Woodiwiss sent a hefty historical romance novel, The Flame and the Flower, to eight different publishers and received eight rejection letters. Some have said that The Flame and the Flower made Woodiwiss famous but that her third novel, Shanna, established her as one of the greatest romance novelists still publishing. Released in 1977, the story of an arrogant young bride and her husband’s return from the brink of death has left Woodiwiss’s fans begging for a sequel ever since.

Happy Endings

Before she ever wrote a single sex scene, a friend gave Woodiwiss a copy of The Valley of the Dolls. In an interview with the Bertelsmann Club, Woodiwiss admits, “It had sex, but it was so depressing, I didn't want to finish it. In my frustration to find a novel that was wonderfully romantic and had a happy ending, I decided to write my own.”
