Following in the tradition of bestselling memoirists riffing on their dysfunctional families -- think Mary Karr (The Liars' Club) and Augusten Burroughs (Running with Scissors), award-winning poet Katy Lederer "pokes" fun at her unconventional childhood at the gambling tables in Poker Face -- a 2003 Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers pick.

Poker Face: A Girlhood Among Gamblers
by Katy Lederer
From our editors: "Lederer tells her story with a keen, dry wit and a gimlet eye for the telling details, revealing the colorful people who inhabit her offbeat world. Eventually, Lederer abandons her quest for glory at the poker table, seeking success as a writer. This funny, painful, but ultimately happy memoir is proof that she has found it."

A Writer's Commitment

In our exclusive interview with Lederer, we asked her if she had any "horror stories" to share about the process she went through to get published. She reflects, "I have been writing seriously for about ten years. I think the only real 'horror' of being a writer is realizing that, no matter what you’ve done or may do, each project you work on may or may not work out as you would like. Writing is a very time-intensive and often emotionally trying thing to do, and if you don’t love it for its own sake, then it’s just not worth it."
