Silent in the Grave
by Deanna Raybourn
Murder, obsession, and a look at the underside of Victorian high society laced with surprising humor: this is the stuff of Raybourn's spectacular debut novel. When Sir Edward Grey collapses and dies at his London home -- in the presence of his wife, Julia, and a roomful of dinner guests -- his wife is scandalized when P.I. Nicholas Brisbane pays a visit and suggests that Sir Edward has been murdered. Together, they follow a trail of clues that leads to a series of surprises and unpleasant truths, and ever closer to a cold-blooded killer just waiting for Lady Julia to find him.

"The worst -- and best -- part of those rejection letters was that almost all of them contained some seed of hope," Raybourn revealed in our interview, when asked how she got her start as a writer. "Almost every editor found something to compliment, and many of them read whole manuscripts before they decided to reject them. I was tantalizingly close to getting published for years before it actually happened."
