Featuring rapid-fire dialogue and spicy characters, Robert B. Parker's books are top-shelf reading for fans of detective crime novels. His Spenser series is several titles strong and an established classic; lately Parker has raised the stakes with two additional series (one featuring private eye Sunny Randle, the other featuring police chief Jesse Stone) that may eventually rival his beloved Boston P.I.

Now and Then
by Robert B. Parker
When a simple case turns into a treacherous and politically charged investigation, Spenser faces his most difficult challenge yet - keeping his cool while his beloved Susan Silverman is in danger. Spenser knows something's amiss the moment Dennis Doherty walks into his office. So when Doherty asks Spenser to investigate his wife Jordan's abnormal behavior, Spenser agrees. Not surprisingly, Spenser catches Jordan with another man. But a couple of days later, all hell breaks loose, and three people are dead. This isn't just a marital affair gone bad. Spenser delves into a complicated and far-reaching operation: Jordan's former lover, Perry Alderson, is the leader of a group that helps sponsor terrorists. Perry doesn't like Spenser poking around his business, so he decides to get to Spenser through Susan. But what Alderson doesn't realize is that Spenser will stop at absolutely nothing to keep Susan out of harm's way.

The Mystery Parker Can't Solve

Parker knows that Spenser is the character his career is built on, but he still doesn't quite get the book market. He lamented the performance of his Irish family saga All Our Yesterdays (1996) in a visit with Barnes & Noble.com: "The non-series books have never sold as well, and that is OK.... I was surprised that All Our Yesterdays didn't sell better -- I thought it was the best thing I've ever written. I guess the audience knows what they want or don't want. If I knew why books sell and don't sell, I would be a rich man."
