The Surprise Title
Many thought that her 1995 novel Coming Home (with sales of over one million copies) would be Pilcher's last. But in the summer of 1999, the author signed a contract for a substantial advance for Winter Solstice, a novel about tragedy and redemption in a small English village.

Fine "Little Stories"
Pilcher told Publishers Weekly, "All my life I've had people coming up and saying, 'Sat under the hair dryer and read one of your little stories, dear. So clever of you. Wish I had the time to do it myself,'" she recalled. "I just say, 'Yeah, fine, pity you don't.' I've been beavering away. And now I'm hoping that nobody will ever, ever say that again."
