The Woodsman's Daughter
by Gwyn Hyman Rubio
Rubio's latest novel is a riveting Southern Gothic tale set among the turpentine farmers in the deep pine woods of 19th-century Georgia. Shadowed by a darkness in her father's past, Dalia Miller leaves behind her farming roots to make a new start for herself and her children -- but her inheritance proves difficult to escape. Readers will be swept up in Rubio's deft and haunting evocation of a former era, and transfixed by this psychologically gripping family saga.

A Writer's Way

"It took me ten years and three shelved novels before I broke in with Icy Sparks," Rubio reveals in our interview. "Icy Sparks was published in 1998, and received substantial recognition for a first novel -- including being chosen as a Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers book and a New York Times Notable Book of 1998. Still though, at the end of three years, its sales were modest, and I became increasingly worried about how to keep it in print. Then came the call from Oprah -- which changed everything."
