Ruff Research

Parkhurst tells Book magazine that she did her own research into the canine intellect by testing her ten-year-old male Shetland sheepdog, Chelsea. "I'd put a towel over his head," Parkhurst recalls. "If a dog is really smart, they'll figure out how to get it off in ten seconds." Chelsea just sat there until Parkhurst turned to answer the phone, then shook off the towel. "He had been obediently waiting for me to look away," she says. "It was fun procrastination," she admits. "'Do I want to write today? Or do I want to put a towel over my dog's head and see how he does?'"
