La Malinche (1505-c. 1529) was both a real woman and a mythic figure. As Hernán Cortés's interpreter and lover, she accompanied the conquistador on his travels in the New World. According to a contemporary source, Cortés himself asserted that after God, La Malinche was the main reason for his success. The author of Like Water for Chocolate has written a stunning novel about a relationship of archetypal proportions.

Esquivel's first novel is a "tall-tale, fairy-tale, soap opera romance, Mexican cookbook, and home-remedy handbook all rolled into one," observed The San Francisco Chronicle. A hit with English- and Spanish-speaking readers alike, the book was adapted for the silver screen by Esquivel herself, who penned the screenplay.

Favorite Writers and Reads

In an interview with Salon, Esquivel talked about some of her favorite books and authors. "I like to read everything," she admitted. "Amy Tan, for example. I am delighted by her writing. And Gabriel García Márquez. And there is an extraordinary novel by Juan Rulfo called Pedro Paramo. García Márquez always said that Rulfo inspired him. He wrote only two books -- Pedro Paramo... and a book of stories called The Burning Plain. He was the first to write what we call magical realism in the modern sense, because of course there have been writers since Cervantes who have employed those techniques."
