A True Visionary

In a lecture given at a Puerto Rican university, the 80-year-old Borges was philosophical about the blindness that overtook him slowly in his adulthood:

"For the task of an artist, blindness is not a total misfortune.... A writer, or any man, must believe that whatever happens to him is an instrument. Everything has been given for an end, so that we may make from the miserable circumstances of our lives things that are eternal, or aspire to be so. If a blind man thinks this way, he is saved. lindness is a gift."
