Perhaps the San Francisco Chronicle said it best: "Bohjalian's hallmark: ordinary people in heartbreaking circumstances behaving with grace and dignity." Since the selection of his dark novel Midwives for Oprah's Book Club back in 1998, Bohjalian has enjoyed mainstream success as one of today's most poignant novelists.

The Last Word

In our exclusive interview, Bohjalian described a tense -- but ultimately undaunting -- encounter with one of his writing professors while a sophomore in college. "Well, Chris I’m-Not-Going-to-Pronounce-Your-Last-Name," she said. "I have three words for you.... Be a banker."

"Someday I will dedicate a book to her," Bohjalian reflected.

When we asked him what author he'd choose to be "discovered," Bohalian singled out novelist Craig Nova. "Nova has won myriad awards, and smart readers and critics certainly respect his work. Unfortunately, he’s not read nearly as often as he deserves to be," he explained. "Start with either Wetware or The Universal Donor. Both are terrific."
