Charlotte Brontė once wrote, "It is in vain to say human beings ought to be satisfied with tranquility: they must have action; and they will make it if they cannot find it." Though she led a quiet life (and died young), Brontė indeed created action in her sweeping, passionate novels, such as the gothic drama Jane Eyre.

Jane Eyre (Barnes & Noble Classics Series)
by Charlotte Brontė, Susan Ostrov Weisser (Introduction)
Brontė's extraordinary novel features one of the most independent and strong-willed female protagonists in all of literature. Poor and plain, Jane Eyre emerges from the trials of orphanhood and poverty to become a governess. When she finds herself falling in love with her employer -- the dark, impassioned Mr. Rochester -- Jane finds her trials have just begun.

Jane Eyre on Film

Brontė's best-known classic has been adapted for the movies several times, but perhaps the most popular version is the BBC miniseries that aired in 11 half-hour episodes during 1983. According to our editors, "This sumptuous adaptation of Charlotte Brontė’s famous gothic romance achieved a level of fidelity unmatched by earlier (and later) versions."

The Professor
by Charlotte Brontė
In 1846 Brontė completed her first novel, The Professor, but it was rejected by many publishing houses, including the publisher who took on the work of her sisters -- Anne's Agnes Grey and Emily's Wuthering Heights. The novel (based on her experiences as a language student in Brussels in 1842) was eventually published two years after her death, in 1857.
