The South Carolina coast forms a lush backdrop for Dorothea Benton Frank's tales of cheatin' husbands, nosy neighbors, and nutty families. But don't let the sand and palm trees fool you: Frank's very funny novels are smarter than the average beach read.

Land of Mango Sunsets
by Dorothea Benton Frank
Dorothea Benton Frank is one of America's most insightful writers weaving highly addictive tales of the conundrums of life with hilarity and heat. Now, in the Land of Mango Sunsets, Frank gives us one woman's journey toward a hard-won truth -- that life isn't always what it appears to be, and the sooner you realize that pride won't keep you warm at night, the happier you will be.

Pen Pals

According to an interview in The Best of East Cooper, Frank had hopes Pat Conroy might endorse her first book, and she tracked him down through their mutual acquaintance Gloria Steinem. She found she had a lot in common with the author of Prince of Tides, including an odd bit of personal trivia: They both own two Cavalier King Charles spaniels, "one the runt and one the pick" of the litter.
