In the Shadow of Memory
by Floyd Skloot
From our editors: "Combining a novelist's eye with a remarkable compassion for a public uncomfortable with the disabled, the result is anything but dour -- Skloot's fusion of his personal journey with accessible, yet fascinating, scientific research is insightful, moving, and downright humorous."

Writing in the Round

In our exclusive interview, Skloot told us about where he does his writing: "I live in a small round house in the middle of 20 acres of forest on a hillside in remote western Oregon. My wife, Beverly, built the place before we were together. The silence, the isolation, the beauty all around me, the lack of edges to the space we live in, and the intimacy with which we live are all powerfully inspiring for my work."

We asked Skloot about what he'd choose to read if he were in charge of a book club. He named Gail Godwin's Evensong and Father Melancholy's Daughter, explaining, "If a book club exists to get people talking about vital issues triggered by reading together, then Godwin's interrelated novels strike me as ideal choices."
