Kay-Marie James is actually the pseudonym of a New York Times bestselling author who penned the culinary caper Cooking for Harry to help her best friend who was struggling financially. The friend refused to accept money outright, but eventually agreed to collaborate with James on the novel, and split the profits with her 50/50. As to James's true identity? Your guess is as good as ours!

Cooking for Harry: A Low-Carbohydrate Novel
by Kay-Marie James
"Absolutely delightful from start to finish, Cooking for Harry is a real treat -- smart, engaging, and entirely winning," say our Editors of this tale of a wife's thankless efforts to keep her husband on the strictest of diets. Of the enigmatic author, Jacquelyn Mitchard (The Deep End of the Ocean) raves, "Kay-Marie James is a wise and winsome writer with a champagne pen who will leave you hungry for more."

Spreading the Word

In our interview, James tells us about her generous ways when it comes to sharing Cooking for Harry with readers: "When the book was published, the editor gave me a box of free books, which are now sitting under my bed. I simply don’t know what to do with them. Every time I travel to give a reading (as myself) I take a few copies of Cooking for Harry with me and donate them (anonymously, of course) to the local library."

Unless

We asked James what books she'd select for discussion if she were running her very own book club. "I’d be reading Carol Shields last novel, Unless, or else Yann Martel’s Life of Pi, because both are books I liked immensely -- without fully understanding why," she reflects.

Emma
by Jane Austen
"My favorite books are always changing," James admits in our exclusive interview. "All of Jane Austen's books, particularly Emma and Pride and Prejudice, have consistently entertained me and enriched my life. I love the way she develops her characters, the multi-layered nuances of women's domestic lives. Plus, she's funny as hell."
