If Joshilyn Jackson knows one thing, that would have to be what it’s like to be southern. Born in Atlanta to a family of “wild fundamentalists,” Jackson writes smart, funny, dark works of the southern gothic sort. Her debut novel, Gods in Alabama, was a major success, and she's serving up her second helping of southern-fried wit in Between, Georgia.

Between, Georgia
by Joshilyn Jackson
"Jackson returns with a second quirky and touching novel about the South. Jackson has been compared to Fannie Flagg, and rightfully so; her characters are vivid and lovable, put in situations that are so hard to explain that it's just easier to pass the book lovingly along to a friend... A climactic ending with perfect story resolution makes this book tidy and uplifting, and even the most cynical reader will surely smile as the back cover closes," raved Booklist in its starred review of Jackson's sophomore effort.

Breaking Into the Biz

In our interview, we asked Jackson how she broke into the writing business. "I did it exactly the way all the Writer’s Digest books tell you to: I sent out umpty-million queries until I found the right agent, and now he sells my books," she explains. "It’s a myth that you have to live in New York and have connections. I live way out in the cotton-soaked wilds of Georgia, and I didn’t know a single person who was actually in the industry when I started. It can be done."

Gods in Alabama
by Joshilyn Jackson
"Joshilyn Jackson's stellar debut has all the elements of great southern fiction, a plucky heroine with a sense of humor, a gripping tale, and a mysterious dead body that needs explanation. Arlene Fleet, with a crystal clear voice and purpose takes the reader on a wild ride of despair, hope and redemption that no reader is likely to ever forget. What a storyteller! What a new, original voice!" exclaimed fellow author Adriana Trigiani of Jackson's first novel.

Water for Elephants
by Sara Gruen
We asked Jackson to tell us about some of her favorite books of late, and Sara Gruen's Water for Elephants made her list. "The perfect evocation of a specific time and place, Gruen’s Depression-era circus tale captured my imagination," she explains. "I could see every scene unfolding, smell the animals and taste the close air of the train. It’s a fantastic book that’s also just a heck of a lot of fun to read."
