The God of Animals
by Aryn Kyle
In this poignant debut novel that some are describing as The Lovely Bones meets The Horse Whisperer, 12-year-old Alice Winston is a loner struggling to deal with her dysfunctional family out in the middle of Desert Valley, Colorado. When her glamorous older sister elopes with a rodeo star, Alice is left to deal with a depressed, bedridden mother, a gruff, overworked father, and their dilapidated horse ranch. During one long, fateful summer, Alice is torn between escaping her burdensome life at the ranch, and helping her father save it -- and their family's dreams.

A Writer's Rituals

"I like to write at night," Kyle reveals in our interview. "There’s something about being awake while the rest of the world is sleeping that I find very stimulating work-wise. The phone doesn't ring; no one knocks a the door. It’s much easier for me to work for long stretches of time without the distraction of daytime life."

We asked Kyle to tell us about some of her all-time favorite books, and Marilynne Robinson's modern classic made her list. "I was assigned this novel for a college class, and during that time I followed my roommate around our apartment, reading lines aloud to her while she was trying to do laundry or clean the kitchen. I think she wanted to strangle me," Kyle recalls.
