No stodgy legal thrillers here: Brad Meltzer’s exhaustively researched, swiftly paced, enormously inventive novels feature young, whip-smart characters who find themselves in high places -- which means they have a long way to fall. The mix, and the suspense, make for an intoxicating read.

|The West Wing Connection|
Meltzer's third novel, a gripping thriller about a young lawyer in the White House who begins dating the president's daughter, was in the editing stages when NBC's The West Wing hit the air. The book and the series share a couple of plot coincidences and a character named Bartlett (or Bartlet, in the case of the show). But Meltzer says on his web site that the parallels are "just a coincidence" and "freaky weird."

Meltzer has said on his web site that he tries to avoid novels while he is writing -- except graphic novels. Of works by Neil Gaiman and Alan Moore, he says, "I eat that stuff like candy." Recently, he agreed to write an installment of the Green Arrow comics.
