Means of Ascent: The Years of Lyndon Johnson
by Robert A. Caro
Jim Collins, author of business bestseller Good to Great, is a Caro fan who recommends vol. 2 of Caro's Johnson biography alongside David McCullough's book on Truman: "Taken together, LBJ and Truman demonstrate that while a leader need not be morally grounded to become powerful, the judgment of history depends directly upon one's moral character." Collins also calls The Power Broker "one of the greatest biographies ever written."

The View from the Gallery

Caro told Book magazine about the difficulties of assembling a detailed portrait of a former President's career: "I really needed a tremendous amount of cooperation from the sort of people who in the 1950s wouldn't have talked much with reporters ... When I started, I would go to the Senate gallery and sit there all day. The tourists would go in and out, and so would the reporters in the press gallery. I'd stay. I was the nut up in the balcony."
