Announcing the Summer Kids’ Book Hangout: Saturday August 10th at 2pm!

Calling all young readers, ages 6-12! On Saturday August 10th at 2pm, Barnes & Noble will host its Summer Kids’ Book Hangout—a fun social event where burgeoning bookworms can discover books, participate in activities, and celebrate reading along with other local kids. Kids can sign up for the event online at this link, and you can find your local store here. We’ve partnered with Disney Publishing to feature four terrific books across different genres and reading levels at this exciting seasonal event. Young readers will travel all over the world (and universe!) as they explore these exciting adventures!

The Isle of the Lost: A Descendants Novel, by Melissa de la Cruz
With an irresistible hook—what if the classic Disney villains we love to hate had children?—this beloved series is catnip for Disney fans and fantasy readers alike. King Beast of Auradon (i.e., land of all the good guys) banished the villains and their minions to a faraway island surrounded by an impenetrable dome 20 years ago, and—the horror!—they had kids. Those villainous offspring are now teens, and four of them are at the forefront of this story: Mal, daughter of Maleficent; Evie, daughter of Evil Queen; Jay, son of Jafar; and Carlos, son of Cruella de Vil. Did those bad apples fall far from their evil trees? Well, you’ll have to read the book to find out for sure.

Serafina and the Black Cloakby Robert Beatty
Serafina’s very existence is a secret. As the daughter of the Biltmore Estate’s maintenance man, she is told never to be seen and lives quietly in the basement of the grand home. That is, until kids start disappearing, and Serafina knows the culprit: a terrifying, black-cloaked man wandering the grounds. This haunting story comes with a twist of magic, which is perfect for young readers looking for a dash of fantasy in their spooky reads.

Shipwreckers! The Curse of the Cursed Temple of Curses—Or—We Nearly Died. A Lot., by Scott Peterson and Joshua Pruett
Get ready to laugh out loud at this crazy whirlwind of an adventure! Twelve-year-old Mike lives and breathes books while his little sister Dani prefers real life adventure. When the family boards a boat with the sign Shipwreckers: tours and adventures with the infamous Captain Kevin Adventureson, they know it’s not your average tourist trip. Follow along as Captain Adventureson takes Mike and his family to seek buried treasure, fight off mummies, and escape a cursed temple—will they survive this journey of a lifetime?

Twinchantment, by Elise Allen
Magic has been outlawed in the kingdom of Kaloon for generations—and so have potentially magical beings, including black cats, and twins. Twin sisters (and princesses) Sara and Flissa have figured out a workaround—they take turns pretending to be one princess, named Flissara, and trade off attending balls, taking fencing lessons, and socializing with unsuspecting young nobles. This has worked fine for ages, until their mother is attacked and her life endangered. Flissa and Sara must come clean and give their ruse—joining forces with a servant boy and his black kitten and going on an epic journey to a dark magical land called the Twists to battle an evil mage and save their mother.

The Kids’ Book Hangout will include giveaways and activities centered around these four titles, which will also be 20% off from 2pm-5pm (while at the Cafe, Blondie Bars will be $1 for all event participants!).

Barnes & Noble is thrilled to help kids celebrate books and to encourage them to find their next favorite author or series!
