Kate Heartfield’s steampunk highwaywoman Alice Payne doesn’t ride into bookstores until November, but already, we’re preparing for her return. The first book, Alice Payne Arrives, is so delightfully fun—a time-jumping romp that unfolds across centuries, as a temporal war rages and only one woman (and her trusty automaton) can hope to stop it—that we’re already eager to follow Alice on her next adventure in Alice Payne Rides, coming in March from Tor.com Publishing.
“When I read Alice Payne Arrives, it made me smile,” said Lee Harris, Heartfield’s editor. “A lot. And sometimes, that’s enough to let an editor know that this is the right book for them. It’s pure, unashamed fun from start to finish! Why you should read it: Highway robbery, time travel and Victorian automata. You need no more reasons? This series is going to make you smile a lot, too!”
“There’s a note from late 2015 in my ideas folder about a highwaywoman who has to solve a mystery to save her own neck,” Heartfield said. “More notes follow, their tone terse and almost annoyed. I had other projects on my desk, but Alice Payne was tapping on my shoulder, waiting to step out onto the road. As 2016 unfolded, I found Alice standing at my side, helping me find one possible answer to another question: how did humanity end up in this timeline? The story needed a big stage and a fast pace. It was, in other words, a novella, at the end of which it’s clear that Alice’s adventures have only begun.”
Today we’re pleased to show off the cover of the second novella, featuring art by Fort and Trevillion Images. Check it out below the official summary. You can preorder both books now: Alice Payne Arrives November 6, and Alice Payne Rides on March 5, 2019.
Alice Payne returns in the thrilling sequel to Kate Heartfield’s Alice Payne Arrives.
After abducting Arthur of Brittany from his own time in 1203, thereby creating the mystery that partly prompted the visit in the first place, Alice and her team discover that they have inadvertently brought the smallpox virus back to 1780 with them.
Searching for a future vaccine, Prudence finds that the various factions in the future time war intend to use the crisis to their own advantage.
Can the team prevent an international pandemic across time, and put history back on its tracks? At least until the next battle in the time war…
