There are few places quite as dreary as Westeros, the setting for George R.R. Martin’s massively popular A Song of Ice and Fire novels and the HBO series Game of Thrones. Unless your barrel of laughs is filled with violent deaths, incest, maimings, rapes, slavery, and crazy priestesses who give birth to murderous shadow monsters (and if it is, wtf, dude?), you probably aren’t smiling a lot during your time there, whether on the page or on the screen.
Such self-seriousness deserves, nay, demands gentle mocking. With the March 31 premiere of Season 3 fast approaching, it’s the perfect time to check out the top five parodies of Game of Thrones.
(Warning: Potential spoilers for seasons/books one and two ahead!)
5) School of Thrones
Or: 10 Things I Hate About Westeros. The trappings of the TV series (dueling families, political infighting, tortured romances) have a surprising amount in common with high school (dueling cliques, prom court campaigns, tortured romances). Nifty production values aside (including an awesome credits sequence), this one wins points for the subtle in-jokes only true fans will appreciate. “We are Starks. Our way is the vintage way.”
4) 16-Bit Game of Thrones
Maybe this one is funnier if you’ve played a lot of old-school RPGs. The first “battle” alone is worth the click (“A wild BRAN spotted your incest!”), but the entire five minutes is pretty much pure Lannister gold. Caution: Potentially NSFW due to some bad language and crudely-animated nudity.
3) Politics as Usual: Attack Ads
Now that the 2012 presidential election is finally, blissfully in the rearview mirror, we can go back to laughing at how jacked up our body politic is. This series of attack ads against various contenders for the Iron Throne is so true-to-life, it hardly qualifies as parody. “Daenerys Targaryen: Wrong for Dragons, Wrong for the Realm.” On the bright side, at least our presidents aren’t typically deposed by being set on fire.
Admittedly, it’s pretty low-hanging fruit, but that doesn’t mean this Simpsons parody of the Game of Thrones credit sequence isn’t pretty great. The three-eyed Blinky the Crow flying out of the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant is a particularly nice touch.
1) Game of Thrones: The Sit-Com
I never really thought about it before seeing this absurd re-edit of Game of Thrones, but there are more than a few similarities between the HBO series and Seinfeld: lots of scenes of people being horrible to each other, improbable relationship pairings (Jamie and Cersei, George and anyone), wacky sidekicks (Kramer, meet Hodor). Unfortunately, Elaine never sicced her dragons on J. Peterman.
Enjoy the laughs while you can. The new season of Game of Thrones is only a few weeks away, and things are looking as bright as ever. Which is to say, not bright at all.
