You must first have a valid Barnes & Noble.com account. After your account is set up and you log in, enter your Educator number in the "Membership Number" box in the discounts section at the bottom of the Payment page at Checkout during your first purchase (see circled field below).



Your Educator number will then be linked to your www.bn.com account and applied automatically each subsequent online purchase.


Can my Educator number be associated with more than one www.bn.com account?

Your Educator number may only be linked to one www.bn.com account at a time. If you wish to change the email address associated with this www.bn.com account, please call customer service at 1-800-THE-BOOK.

Can both my Educator number and my Member number be associated to one www.bn.com account?

Yes, you are permitted to have both a Member number and an Educator number associated with the same www.bn.com account. However, you cannot apply both discounts to the same order.

I have a Member Number associated with my www.bn.com account. How do I add my Educator number?

If you have a www.bn.com account, and have previously made an online purchase using your Member card, select the "Change" button under the Payment section. Then enter your Educator number in the Membership Number field. After you press "Calculate Order Total", you may then choose which discount you want to apply to your order each time you visit. However, you cannot apply both discounts to the same order. The corresponding savings for each discount option selected will appear on your screen.

I have an Educator Number associated with my www.bn.com account. How do I add my Member number?

If you have a www.bn.com account, and have previously made an online purchase using your Educator card, select the "Change" button under the Payment section. Then enter your Member number in the Membership number field. After you press "Calculate Order Total" you may then choose which discount you want to apply to your order each time you visit. However, you cannot apply both discounts to the same order. The corresponding savings for each discount option selected will appear on your screen.

How are the Educator discounts applied to my purchase?

The 20% Educator discount is off the publisher's list price. Educator discounts cannot be combined with other discounts or coupons, unless specifically noted. For example, a title with a publisher's list price of $25.00 will be discounted at 20% off to $20.00 for Educators. However, if the current Barnes & Noble Online Price offers an equal or greater discount than the price with the Educator discount, then the Barnes & Noble Online Price will apply instead of the Educator discount. (The Barnes & Noble Online Price is the price at Checkout before taxes, shipping and handling charges, and discounts are applied.)

Note: If the Online Price is the same as the publisher's list price, only the Online Price will be displayed.


Can I use a coupon with my Educator discount?

Please see individual coupon Terms & Conditions for details and eligibility. However, unless specifically noted, the Educator discount does not apply in conjunction with any non-Educator coupons or with any corporate or prearranged group discounts such as the following, Barnes & Noble Membership, Barnes & Noble.com Professional, Technical and Business Bookstore discounts; employee discounts; Student Advantage discounts; in store corporate, institutional, and volume discounts.

How will I know what items are eligible for the Educator discount online at www.bn.com?

If we consider an item suitable for use in the classroom or with the student population, and existing discounts off the list/online price are not 20% or greater, then the item will be eligible for the Educator discount and the savings will be noted for that item at Checkout.

You may also search for products eligible for the Educator discount by going to www.bn.com/educator and using the search field.


Can I use my phone number in place of my Educator number at www.bn.com?

Only your Educator number can be used to ensure that your Educator discount is applied to your online order.

Why am I getting an error message indicating that my Educator number is invalid when I order at www.bn.com?

There are several reasons why you may be experiencing an error message:
    If you recently received your Educator card it may not be activated online yet -- it normally takes 1-2 business days for Educator card to work online.

    Your Educator number may not have been entered accurately. Check the number and then re-enter it. Please note: your phone number cannot be used in place of your Educator number online.

    If your Educator number is already stored in your www.bn.com account, you do not need enter it again at Checkout.

    If you've requested a replacement Educator card, your Educator number will have changed and your www.bn.com account will need to be updated by entering your new Educator number at Checkout.


When using my Educator card at www.bn.com, a "Savings with Coupons" message is displayed under my Educator number in the Payment section at Checkout. Is that my Educator Savings?

Yes, when the Educator is applied to your order, Educator Savings will be noted as "Savings with Coupons," regardless of whether a coupon was applied to your order.

My Educator discount wasn't applied to an online order that contained multiple items eligible for the Educator discount. Why?

If your discount was not applied to an online order, it may be because your Educator number has not been stored in your www.bn.com account. Once your Educator number has been stored, it will remain on your www.bn.com profile and your Educator discount will be automatically applied for as long as your Educator account is active. Enter your Educator number in the "Membership Number" box in the discounts section at the bottom of the Payment page at Checkout during your first purchase (see circled field below).



Otherwise, it may be that your current Educator account has expired. You may renew it in store.

My Educator discount wasn't applied to a particular item in my cart. Why?

Discounts are available on select products that we consider suitable for use in a classroom or with the student population. The item you purchased may not be eligible for the Educator discount and therefore no Educator discount will be applied to that item at checkout.

Also, if current Barnes & Noble Online Price provides greater savings than price with Educator discount, then Barnes & Noble Selling Price will apply and there will be no Educator savings for the item. (The Barnes & Noble Online Price is the price at Checkout before taxes, shipping and handling charges, and discounts are applied.) For example: an item with a list price of $16.00 and an Online price of $10.40 has already received 35% discount. Therefore, the lesser 20% Educator discount will not apply.

I have an Educator number associated to my www.bn.com account. Why am I unable to enroll in the Member Program?

If your Educator number is associated to your www.bn.com account you will not be able to purchase a new Barnes & Noble Membership using that www.bn.com account. You may enroll in the Barnes & Noble Member Program at one of our stores. Otherwise, please contact Customer Service for help.

I have both an Educator number and a Member number associated to my www.bn.com account. Why isn't the Educator number visible?

If your Educator number is not visible at Checkout, select the 'Change' button under the Payment section. This should reveal both the Educator and Member discount options, and the respective card numbers.
