About the Author
In his role with Gould Evans, David applies insights from the firm's education research and project experience to benefit clients across its five national studios. His curiosity has led to the firm's adoption of a uniquely multidisciplinary design process, unlocking new insights through collaborative work with educators, anthropologists, psychologists, industrial designers, and industry partners of education institutions.
He is particularly passionate about engaging the unbridled minds of young students, and tapping into their creative genius to reframe standards in educational planning. His end goal is the exploration of emerging 21st-century educational pedagogies and how they interact with new designs for the built environment. STEAM Studio is an ideal incubator for such opportunities.
Dr. Sonnenberg is a professor in the Department of Education at Rockhurst University in Kansas City, Missouri. She co-founded STEAM Studio in 2014, wanting to create a space where current and future teachers could experience Design Thinking and develop that method in their own classrooms.
Anyone who knows Dr. Sonnenberg knows that she cannot sit still. Having researched the effectiveness of mobility in increased engagement, she makes sure that in her Rockhurst University graduate and undergraduate courses, as well as in STEAM Studio, she and her learners are moving, questioning, building and evolving themselves: mind, body and (hopefully) soul.
She was awarded the 2015 Excellence in Community-Based Teaching & Scholarship Award and the 2016 Educator of the Year award from the American Institute of Architects.

Highly informative book for me on the role in design in our education, and how it will specifically help today’s youth participate in tomorrow’s working world. It was interesting to read the creative approach Gould Evans and the partnering institutions took in making an environment that inspired youth participation and growth in terms of design. The book is super easy to read, isn’t text heavy, and contains vital information for our educators and parents. I wish that some of the methods employed in the STEAM program were used when I was in my K-12 education. The book reminds us of the inevitable changes in future job markets, where technology will likely take over all jobs but ones that require uniquely human capabilities, such as design and creative problem solving. A must read.
