Much better to hold out for the 1991 release of the original soundtrack if you can find it. This is, without question, one of the ten greatest movie soundtracks ever and it's hard to imagine it did NOT win Best Score in 1958. The music is as much a character of the film as Charleton Heston or Gregory Peck. This version is not bad, but not the best rendering of this glorious score.

I'd have to say the whole film score is among the finest ever composed: brilliantly evocative and easy to listen to on the surface, but with a great many harmonic and figurative subtleties within the musical texture that enhance the experience, and make repeat listenings memorable. (It was a pretty good film, too, though overlong, with several twists on common Western themes that kept a high degree of unpredictability. Well worth renting for a night's entertainment, if you have the time.)

The Movie itself was dumb and predictable, but the music by Jerome Moross is gorgeous and dripping with blood stirring western themes. The first 10 tracks are beautiful, all evoking what they were supposed to: big, wild, western country. The rest of the CD falls short of that goal. But with more than half of the CD absolutely loaded with great full-bodied music of the Wild West, it's still a great buy.
