I liked the book enough to make it to the end, but this novel suffers from a few big problems. First, the book needs a heavy dose of editing. The plot often gets lost in the pointless meandering (and generally self-loathing) inner thoughts of the various POV characters. This resulted in a high level of bloat in the text that a good edit could have cut down. Second, there was not a good arc to the plot. This is one of those "first installment" novels that just kind of stops rather than wrapping up to a conclusion point. I love a good cliffhanger, but there does need to be an inherent conclusion to the story being told in THIS book. There is no real conclusion here. The story just stops at a cliffhanger point. On the positive side, I did enjoy the world-building, especially the use of Korean culture/language as the touchstone for the "Immaculates," instead of the much more common Chinese and Japanese tropes. There is a lot of promise here for a good series, but I really hope book 2 moves the story along better.

I don't read fantasy to have a political agenda shoved down my throat!

I read this book and "The Grace of Kings" back to back.  I found "A Crown for Cold Silver" to be richer, more exciting, and had amazing worldbuilding.  I can't wait for the next book in this saga.
