The first book from this author covers a lot of bases; supernatural, romance, comedy, suspense, and plenty of interesting characters. It starts off with a pretty girl, a secret past, confusion in a new place, and some hope in the finding out she's not entirely alone. But... it's not what you'd expect. And that's a good thing. It's not cliche, and it's not a typical YA fantasy novel. In fact I'd say it's aimed at a more adult audience, but still plenty of fun for teens too. Everyone has a secret, and first impressions aren't always what they seem. Our heroine stands well on her own. The romance is a subplot, not something constantly on her mind, which is a breath of fresh air. From the title I would say it's the start of a series, so obviously questions will be left unanswered, and by the end of it you'll want to know them! Yes, it's a fantasy so there's plenty of strange going's on, but at it's heart it a group of misfits just trying to get by finding comfort in each other, even if they do drive each other crazy at times. But that's what family's for, right? An overall great beginning for a new author. Hints of coming side-plots woven throughout to keep you guessing, characters you'll love and characters you'll hate, or love to hate. I could point out some minor flaws, but what authors first book doesn't have those? The story is good enough to easily overlook them and keep you wanting more. I can't wait to see what's next!

A Mirror Among Shattered Glass is told from multiple point of views. Romarin's point of view is the only one told in first person. Each character has some kind of something going on in their lives. We get parts of some of their histories. I'm still not sure what the overall conflict/issue is that was supposed to form the plot. What are they all working towards besides their own little separate issues? What was I supposed to be following? The potential is here for a great story, but I feel like I missed something. Or maybe a few somethings. The ARC of A Mirror Among Shattered Glass by Romarin Demetri was kindly provided to me by the author for review. The opinions are my own.
