Collette Fortier will do anything to spring her father out of jail, at the cost of her own life if it comes to that. Pierre Fortier, who was one of Napoleon’s assassins, is the only thing on Collette’s mind, and not even Rafe Beaumont will distract her from her mission: getting her hands on codes from the Foreign Office. Rafe, the celebrated London rogue, who has women begging for his favours, and Collette can understand why, but she cannot help but be smitten, but he would not look twice in her direction. But he does, and she stuns him by refusing to succumb to his charms, which leaves Rafe flabbergasted. The unimaginable has happened: a woman is not interested in him! Still, it’s his mission to find out what Collette is doing in England and if she is a French spy, so he’ll have to change his tactic. What sacrifices one has to make for one’s country! Rafe will have to be a platonic friend to a woman for the first time in his life, and it will be Rafe’s most difficult mission. Collette is a wonderful heroine, determined and loyal, and not one to make rash decisions. I respected her doggedness in wanting to rescue her father, but I couldn’t forget that he was an assassin, and this was a bit of a sore point for me; I couldn’t honestly see things from her point of view, but it’s a personal matter and it’s how she felt. Rafe is a rather unusual hero, every so gorgeous, he knows it, and it really defines who he is. I thought he had a bit of a George Clooney vibe about him, not in his looks, but in his attitude. The writing is so splendid that I was almost tempted to wax poetic about it, the descriptions of Regency England are stunning, but I will spare you the torture. The romance is far from an easy one, as Rafe doesn’t know how to love, but all the more satisfying for it. The secondary characters are absolutely marvellous, there are several unexpected plot twists, the last one probably the most startling, and Now, I will be impatiently waiting for my personal favourite Survivor’s story: the forever enigmatic Jasper.

An Affair with a Spare (The Survivors, #3) by Shana Galen ...This is the third book in THE SURVIVORS series and I have loved them all ...thanks to #NetGalley for allowing me to preview this book... Rafe Beaumont is the 5th son of an Earl..a war hero..called The Seducer because he could get information needed from any woman. Collette Fortier ...daughter of Napoleon's "assassin" spying for the French to try to save her father. This story takes you on a journey of laughs, intrigue, danger, steamy sex, some sad and happy tears....all the way to your HEA. Collette 's spouting on about Hedgehogs was one of my favorite things...I can't wait for Jasper's story...some how I think it will be the best of all three and that is saying something.

Interesting storyline. Rafe Beaumont is tasked by his old commanding officer to ascertain whether Miss Fournay is in fact Collette Fortier, and if she is in London spying. If she is, he is to discover what secrets she hopes to unearth and then kill her. Rafe is a lover, not a fighter but he has never had to work at it before; women tend to throw themselves at him and he doesn’t know what to do with a woman who blushes and is tongue tied in his presence (except when talking about the mating habits of hedgehogs!) I loved this story, the characters and the satisfying ending. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

An Affair with a Spare is the third in the series but it also a stand alone story. This is a story of seduction, espionage and the efforts someone would go to in order to save a loved one. As a child, Rafe was always the forgotten one but now he is one of twelve survivors in Draven's troop and is known as the Seducer. Collette is the daughter of an assassin who is imprisoned in France and she is trying to find secret British codes in order to secure his release. Rafe is assigned the task of seducing her to determine what she knows and where her father is but along the way their infatuation with each other leads to feelings that neither is ready to deal with. This is a cute, fun story with a few twists and turns that will keep the reader entertained.

This was a fun, funny, and adventuresome read. Rafe is a true English rake with Mommy issues while Colette is a French "spy" intent on saving her assassin father. They were at cross-purposes, but found irresistible attraction with each other. The first part was a tad slow with balls and fumbling attempts by both Rafe and Collette, but the action picked up after Rafe's assignment became official. There were lots of sexytimes too, and great supporting characters. The last part was my favorite with the tension-packed sequence of whether they'll get together or not. Even knowing that HEA is guaranteed in romance, Shana still made the reader excited to find out how she'll pull it through. I can't wait for Jasper's story. He intrigues me so much and I hope Shana finds a worthy heroine for him.

3.5 Stars The Survivors series is definitely one of my favorite historical fiction romance series. I loved the first two books in the series, and while this one was entertaining, I’d agree with others that it wasn’t quite on par with the other two. I loved Rafe and his backstory. His role as a seducer was well written and sometimes humorous. I struggled a little with Collette’s character though. My favorite scenes were always the ones with The Survivors together. The epilogue is told from Jasper’s POV which makes me eager for the next book as I hope it means it’s his.

The seducer has met his match and jumped without a thought into the flames. I couldn’t put it down from the start wondering what would happen between them and when. They both had reasons for avoiding each other, but to everyone else, they were stupid to try. I was on the edge of my seat when they came up with their plan. At every turn, they were met with a fight and sometimes a friend, but it was always a surprise. I wanted to scream when he went back to London, but the talk he had with his stepmother and other were so worth it. The ending was perfect especially with what she made him do. I hope to see them again and Grimes was an interesting man. Collette will do anything to save her father even shielding her heart. I loved her right away because she tried so hard to find what she needed and wouldn’t give up. She let fear and her mission blind, but not completely. Rafe always wanted the exciting mission he just didn’t realize this one would turn into one. He will break your heart with his reason for not wanting to marry and win you over with his charm and kindness. I loved that he was willing to do anything to help. I can’t wait for the next story!

A spy for the English government Rafe Beaumont sometimes use his charms to persuade women to give up their secrets. Now he’s skill are being put to the test as he charms Collette Fortier, the daughter of elusive assassin. Little does Rage know she’s being forced to spy for the French regime that holds her father hostage. What a cat and mouse romance this is, it’s filled with adventure, intrigue and passions. A well written story with strong characters who find themselves tempted as they’ve never been before, but will they work together in the end or will their secrets pull them in different directions. This is my honest opinions after I voluntarily read a copy of this book that was provided to me with no requirements for a review.

Thank you to Netgalley, Sourcebooks Casablanca and Shana Galen for receiving an ARC in exchange for an honest review. Oh my Lordie Lord Lord. Whatever shall I do? (Swoon). I just can’t for the life of me decide how to rate this!! I mean, it is what it is (a historical romance) and it doesn’t pretend to be anything but. For that, I give it credit. It wasn’t nearly as annoying as some of these romance novels can be. It follows the trope, the writing is light but the characters were not cardboard. I was really glad that Collette didn’t play the completely helpless damsel in distress. I have a hard time stomaching it when the girl is useless and the relies on the man to do everything. Realistically that would never happen, even back then. Also, why would the man fall in love with her when he has usually rejected a million other females that behave that way. The point is supposed to be that she is different and that’s what entices him. There also wasn’t a lot of time spent on them fighting and hating each other before falling in love. There was the logical reason of them both being spies that puts them in each other’s path. They develop a relationship by getting to know each other. I enjoyed that. Rafe, the main male character, was also painted a little different. Yes, he was gorgeous and had abs to die for, but his job as a spy was as a seducer of women. He was really rather inept at the physical confrontations. His soldier buddies laugh at him and don’t take him that seriously because he never fought on the battle front. I though that made him endearing. He wasn’t the he-man, overly macho man that can do everything with ease. Having to seduce women for information did make him a rather good lover, so there was that perk! Thank goodness Claire wasn’t the virgin sacrifice. So happy that she had some experience, even though she was still virginal in behaviour. These are the little differences that for me made this more of an enjoyable read. So, I used to enjoy these romance novels much more when I was younger. I loved the whole experience from the first meeting to the happily ever after. I was excited to revisit this genre. “An Affair With A Spare” is book 3 in a series called “The Survivors”. You do not have to have read the other novels in the series and can enjoy this book as a stand alone. The story is about a French woman, Claire, who is trying to free her father, a former assassin for Napoleon, from his jailers. She is sent to England to spy and bring back the codes needed to decipher the British communications. Rafe, a son of an earl, fought in an elite unit and has just returned home to England. His commander learns about Claire and sends Rafe in to seduce her, get all the information he can from her and then kill Claire and her father. As they both spy on each other, they fall in love. I have to say, neither one of them was convincing as a spy. I know Claire’s character wasn’t supposed to be a professional but still they weren’t even the least bit good, which was actually kind of funny. Can Claire trust Rafe to help her or will he turn her in to the authorities. The story was enjoyable, the premise believable and the sex scenes were exciting, tasteful and plentiful. I’m not sure what happened but I was reading along nicely and then boom. Something hit me. I sort of lost my taste for it and I’m not sure why. This was maybe about a third of the way through. A romance novel is like dessert. Decadent, sweet, light and fluffy, some

Oh, this series! Rafe's story was all I hoped it would be when he got stuck babysitting the orphans at Juliana's orphanage in the last book. ;) One knew there had to be something lurking behind his love-'em-and-leave-'em ways (his nickname in the war was "the Seducer") and oh, did it tug at my heartstrings to hear what it was. There were some guilty giggles, too--no, it's not amusing that a small child is forgotten by the rest of his large family, yet somehow Ms. Galen's retelling of a few of the situations made me smile. More than once. (Not my fault! Blame her excellent storytelling skills...) Speaking of amusement, Collette's tendency to spout off random hedgehog facts when she's nervous (more often than not having to do with their mating habits--apparently these are the books she read to help her learn English???) had me out-and-out LOLing so. Many. Times. Add in the drama and danger of spying and (possible) double-crossing and/or double-agenting, and it's pretty much a given that I'm going to love this book. Likable, relatable characters, humor, andespionage? Yes, please! Ms. Galen definitely piques our interest in her epilogue about what is going on with the scarred and mysterious Jasper--that had better mean that his book in next! In the meantime, I'll get caught up by listening to Ewan's story in an attempt to buy patience... Rating: 4 stars / A- I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

an affiar with a spare is the third book in the survivors series, and rafe beaumont might be my favorire hero. her's charming and kind and sensitive. he's not maybe the smartest or most savvy but when he falls for collette he falls heart and soul and he will do everything to protect her. so much of this story is built around the plot of the animosity between the french and british post-napoleon. but how collette and rafe build their relationship really builds on the emotional and physical attraction between these two characters. it ends up being super romantic and swoony and of course, it's exactly what you want to read. or maybe it's exactly what i want to read. **an affair with a spare will publish on july 3, 2018. i received an advance reader copy courtesy of netgalley/sourcebooks casablanca in exchange for my honest review.

Collette Fortier, a Frenchwoman, is attending a ball with her friend, Lady Ravensgate, and hoping for an introduction to Lieutenant Colonel Draven. Collette has been trying to get in with the people who are part of Britain’s Foreign Office. She is seeking to find the codes that Britain uses to encrypt their messages and to eventually free her father who has been imprisoned by the Bourbons. Rafe Beaumont is the youngest of 8 children of the Earl and Countess of Haddington. With such a large and busy family, Rafe was often forgotten and left behind. Thus, his schooling was sadly lacking. Although he was never a scholar, his handsome looks more than make up for it. When he joined the military, he found his niche. As he has always been popular with the ladies, this means he sometimes finds himself in difficult situations. At the ball, when Rafe needs rescuing from an over zealous woman, Colonel Draven steps in to help him. In exchange for his help, Colonel Draven tasks Rafe with finding out more about Collette. Is she who she says she is or is she a French spy? If she is, Rafe must find out what information she seeks, and then he must kill her. Thus begins another spy/romance novel. I have to say that I have known Shana Galen for a long time. She is a very talented author and her writing has only gotten better over the years. Early in her career, she wrote mostly historical romance novels that I loved. Then, she moved into adding a spy here and there. Now, her books seem to focus on spy novels. There are a lot of readers who love them, but I honestly do not. Again, I love this author but do not like this theme. For those who do, she is the author for you. Copy provided by NetGalley in exchange for a fair and honest review.

I loved Rafe and Collette's story!! Rafe is tasked with finding out the true identity of Collette. He tries to use his renown skills as a seducer of women to find the information, but Collette seems to be immune to his tactics. He ends up taking the advice of a friend and tries another tactic. As he spends more time with Collette, he finds himself in danger of losing his heart, which he never thought would happen. But what will Rafe do when he learns that Collette is the daughter of a renown assassin? He has finally found love, but can he go against his orders to bring Collette's father to justice? This was a great addition to the Survivors series and I can't wait to read the next book in the series, Unmask Me if You Can, which is Lord Jasper's story! It will be out in November.

Rafe Beaumont, a charming and seductive former special ops soldier matches wits with Collette Fortier--a French assassin's daughter determined to find a set of codes to free her father and start a new life. Rafe and Collette circle each other in the midst of a busy London season and while they both know not to trust the other they find themselves fighting a pull they are unable to resist. This installment of the Survivor's series felt...different from the previous books in the series. It starts off with the same upbeat humor and comical situations as the previous two; when we are introduced to Rafe he is haplessly running and dodging female pursuers in a scene that is dynamic and as great flow. But as Rafe and Collette try to friend-zone each other while trying to pry each other secrets from one another, it just didn't capture me. With all the said I thought this book had a classic romantic ending but it won't go down as the most memorable in the series.

Rafe Beaumont, fifth son of an earl, uses his irresistible charm with the ladies to glean dangerous war secrets. Now he's putting those skills to the ultimate test: capturing an elusive assassin by seducing his daughter. The problem? She's entirely immune to Rafe's flattery. Never before has Collette Fortier met a man as attractive as Rafe. But her father's life is at stake, and succumbing to Rafe would be disastrous. But when Rafe turns the tables on her, offering support and friendship instead of a fleeting affair, Collette finds herself tempted in ways she never could have imagined... My Thoughts First off have to say after immersing myself in the past two reads with death and dying this lively historical romance story is a breath of fresh air. Plus learned more than needed to know about Hedgehog mating habits from our heroine Collette Fortier. From glittering ballrooms to the more dangerous areas of London this book encompasses a wide variety of a society that has always fascinated me. Our heroine Collette Fournay/Fortier is a very passionate French woman of only 20 and our hero Rafe Beaumont is not much older as he is also in his early 20's. However back when these characters would have lived most people of their age were expected to live as and make their own way as adults from an even earlier age than that. Poor Rafe, his illustrious reputation as a man-about-town magnet for willing women is being threatened. Funny thing is his attraction to Collette is actually returned, she is just the first in a long line of female conquests to have the will to resist The Seducer for any length of time. Collette wanted to perform the task which would supposedly free her Father from his incarceration in France. However once she starts trying the object of her quest is not amenable to any kind of persuasion on her part to divulge any information. Enter Rafe Beaumont, tasked with his own onerous instructions that made sense when he did not really know Collette Fournay/Fortier yet as they do grow closer can he actually carry out his orders? This was filled with quite a bit more relationship building than it's predecessors for me and in a much more fun manner for the most part as well. Not a bad addition to what has been a great series so far. [EArc from Netgalley ]

This was an incredible read! This is the story of Rafe Beaumont, an absolutely breathtaking specimen of a man, an English war hero, oh and spy. Put him together with the very shy, determined, hedgehog information spouting Collette Fortier...who is also a spy, and you end up with an amazing story. Collette has come to England after the war has ended, to find the information she needs to free her father, while doing her best to be subtle, and not be noticed overmuch, the foreign office becomes suspicious of her and puts their best man on the case. Rafe has been told to get information from her, find out what she is after and get rid of her if need be. But as their relationship grows, he finds it harder and harder to do his job, and she will not stop trying trying to save her father no matter what. This was the second book in The Survivors series, I have not read the first, but have no fear that did not lessen my love or enjoyment from this book. I would definitely recommend this as a great read, with a great plot, lots of love, and laughs.

Hard to believe but each book in this series just keeps getting better. In a story of hidden identities and deeply hidden emotions, this book will take you on an engaging journey to an ending that will leave you wanting more. This is the story of Rafe Beaumont, termed the Seducer as he spied for the crown. Of course that is not known by many but if you just looked into his violet eyes, one could believe it! Collette Fortier is on a mission of her own, to obtain information to send back to France to free her father from prison. But when the spy begins seducing the spy, what will happen? Upon meeting, Rafe is his charming self, but Collette seems to be immune to his charms. But as he offers her friendship (of course in hopes of getting info from her), he is hard to resist. In typical Shana Galen prose, you are taken through a wonderful tale, full of spies, suspense, traitors and even amusing quips about hedgehogs (yes wait until you read what that is about!). I really did not want to turn the last page, but I know there will be another book in this series and just cannot wait!!! Lori Dykes

An Affair with a Spare by Shana Galen is book Three in the Survivors series. This is the story of Rafe Beaumont and Collette Fortier. I have read the other books in this series (and loved them!) but feel you can make this a standalone book if you wish to do so. Rafe being a spare son to his titled father was able to be free to become become a spy and be put in questionable situations. With his charm and good looks he has been able to seduce some top secrets out of women. When given the assignment to spy on the daughter of Napoleon’s most successful assassin he is shocked that she can't be seduced by him. Collette is working to free her father who is being held hostage by the French royalists. To free her father she must spy for them and she is trying to break a letter in code that may also help her father. So when Rafe comes around she tries to resit him and his charm. But when he in turn changes things by offering friendship and help she starts to weaken. This was a page turner for me!

Humor, Spies, Befuddlement & Hedgehogs, Oh My! Collette Fortier, aka Fourney, is pretending to be the niece of Lady Ravengate, the contact to the Bourbon government, imprisoning her father. He was Napoleon's most deadly assassin, although forced into that role. To free her father Collette has been tasked with stealing the English secret code so the French can decode Britton's communications. She has come to the notice of Lieutenant Colonel Draven of Britain's Foreign Office. He tasks Rafe Beaumont, one of the surviving members of Draven's elite suicide squad in Napoleon's War, to find out if she's spying. Rafe was known as "The Seducer" as he's charming as so very beautiful. Women has ALWAYS fallen at his feet. It was an easy task for him to seduce information from women during the war. Now back in England as the 5th son of the Earl of Huddingfort, he's just kinda drifting from one woman to the next, never making real connections. Draven believes he's perfect to determine if Collette is Fortier and if she's spying. Rafe is totally at a loss as to how to proceed when Collette rejects him. He's NEVER been rejected! Truth be told she's overwhelmed by him and gets tongue tied around him. When she gets nervous she starts spouting facts about hedgehogs since that's the only text she had teaching herself English. It makes for some really funny, laugh out loud moments in this story. Not to mention Rafe being at a total loss as to how to proceed with his mission. Rafe finds himself taking advice from his friend Jasper as to the strategy to engage Collette. I found the whole story engaging and funny. This is a really good story! Thank you Shana Galen for inviting me to be part of your review group and Sourcebooks Casablanca for the opportunity to honestly review this story.

The third story in the Survivors series, An Affair with a Spare was a little different than the first two because it involved a somewhat devious french spy, Collette Fortier, and the son of an earl and war hero, Rafe Beaumont. Collette seemed like an unlikely match for Rafe and it took me a while to warm up to her. The more I learned about her situation - that she was being forced to spy by people who were holding her father hostage, the more I could sympathize with her. Not only was her father everything to her, but she was also pretty incompetent as a spy. Rafe was a bit annoying with his womanizing ways and his somewhat callousness in regards to women, but since his past had affected his ability to trust them, his actions were a bit more understandable. I liked when the story really got going, as they put their plan into action and events started to unfold as they should. Rafe was a bit thickheaded though and I was happy he finally came to his senses, although I kept wanting to yell at him to stop at the bank for goodness sake - he was a very poor planner as far as the future goes. I’m very curious to hear how things go for this couple, I hope we hear more about them in the next book to come.

I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley to read in exchange for a fair review. An Affair With A Spare by Shana Galen is the 3rd book in her Survivor series. This book could be read as a stand-alone but I think you will enjoy it even more if you have read the first two books as they are both excellent as well. Collette Fortier is in England pretending to be a sweet young debutante in order to obtain codes used by the British during secret correspondence. Her father is being held captive in a French prison to ensure her compliance. Rafe Beaumont one of the Survivors aka The Seducer has been assigned the task of discovering just who Collette is and preventing her from obtaining what she seeks. What he thought was an easy assignment ... seduce the girl get her secrets ... eliminate her if necessary turns out to be not so easy when she turns him down flat ... something that has never happened to him before. If you like a bit of adventure, mystery and danger with your romance then you will most likely enjoy this book as much as I did. Quite steamy. What a great series this is! During the war with France, a group of 3rd sons were recruited for what we would call a special ops unit. Some of them survived and created the Survivors’ Club. Most of them still have nightmares. Lt. Rafe Beaumont, aka The Seducer, is a very handsome man and his specialty was getting information from women during the Napoleonic wars. The youngest of 8 children whose mother ran off when he was 4, he doesn’t trust women. He has been ordered to befriend a Frenchwoman in London as his superior, Lt. Col. Draven, thinks she is up to no good. Rafe’s problem is she seems to be the first woman not attracted to him. Collette Fortier is using an alias, Fournay, as she tries to get codes from the British Foreign Office to free her father from a French prison. She is attracted to Rafe but her father comes first. As he pretends to court her, real feelings interfere with his mission. Collette receives a letter that truly scares her, and she tells him her dilemma. Rafe decides to help her knowing it will harm him. The rest of spy versus spy is for you to read as I won’t spoil this wonderful book! It’s complex and very well written. I can’t wait for more of this excellent series!
