This album is a re-release of the
Didjitalis debut,
Positive Form Negative Space, originally released in Australia. The concept is to mix
trance and
dance elements from
Nick West, a Tokyo-based DJ, with didjeridoo grooves from
Mike Edwards -- organic and
electronic coming together, as it were. The result is rather unsurprising in many ways. Indeed, the organic and
electronic are fused together perfectly, with straightforward
trance and
dance grooves taking over throughout. At the same time, the inclusion of the organic is realistically not such an innovation in recorded music.
Trance and
dance DJs regularly sample organic,
traditional, and
ethnic bits and pieces in their compositions. The primary innovation here presumably comes in the live shows. That said, the album is entirely enjoyable, with catchy riffs and hooks not quite contributed by either artist alone, but through their combination. Worth a listen. ~ Adam Greenberg
