There was more to this book than I expected. In this book Susan Mallery took the time to develop all the main characters. Not every author can carry off switching character perspectives, but Susan nailed it in this book. It was the perfect touch that allows the reader to really see the characters develop. I was really surprised by the turn of events with Rebecca. I thought there was going to be a typical end where the selfish character had a change of heart immediately after the major break, but Susan didn't take the easy way out. This book was emotional, funny and touching. I highly recommend this book for anyone who likes to see the "bad guys" get what they deserve in the end and the good guys find true happiness.

In high school in Southern California, Jayne Scott was an introverted student who spilled coffee on herself even while walking through life cautiously. Rebecca Worden was a beautiful extrovert who ran through life as if running the 100 yard dash, but never spilled a drop on herself. They became the best of friends and remained BFFs though Rebecca fled the country for the past dozen years. While Rebecca was overseas, her mother Elizabeth and to a lesser degree her dad Blaine "adopted" Jayne as her offspring when the latter's mom died. Now Rebecca has come home to cause her mother havoc. However, the return of the prodigal natural daughter may impact her pal big time, but not as much as the return of Elizabeth's prodigal son David, who the introverted Jayne has loved since first meeting him back in her high school days. This is an entertaining extended family drama that fans will enjoy as the cast, for the most part, seems genuine. In spite of Elizabeth being over the top of the Sierras with her all consuming control of anyone inside her sphere, she makes the tale entertaining as she manipulates those who try to care about her. Readers will enjoy the Best of Friends as the audience will want to know what happens to Jayne. Harriet Klausner

This book is not the frothy read you might expect. Some of the behavior, language and scenes are very harsh. The secondary characters that were selfish and self-centered at the beginning remained that way at the end. What I found the most disturbing was that they stayed on the self-destructive road to the bitter end. I did enjoy the book but it wasn't a light, fun read. I was definitely pulling for Jayne.

Loved they way Jayne stood her gound in the end and the way David finally understood. Can't wait for a sequel about Rebecca.

I have read of of Susan Mallery books and this one was a real downer for me. I wanted to drop kick the mother and the daughter. I suppose it would be a good book club discussion with the questions in the back of the book. I don't ever throw books away as I always either take them to the library, nursing homes, hospitals etc. But this one was just such a depressed book that i threw it away. sorry Susan but i really did not like this book

I have read a few of her books, mostly the Fool's Gold edition and this book is not nearly as good as those. I did not like the characters as much maybe because I cannot related to their lifestyle and attitude. It was just ok for me.

It is okay to forgive someone who is hurtful, but never let anyone continually hurt you mentally or physically.
