Maddy Powers has done her level best in trying to forget Brando "Bran" Pallidono and their shared kissed. Maddy is taking a group of teenagers to a remote island as part of a program she runs. Bran can't seem to get Maddy off his mind no matter what he does. When smugglers try kidnapping Maddy and company is where they go terribly wrong. Bran to the rescue. Can Bran admit his feelings for Maddy? Can Bran rescue Maddy and company? Your answers await you in Devil and the Deep. I'm loving this series! The characters and story are unique, complex, intriguing, honest, passionate, down to earth, full of strength, hope, rich, bold, and hardworking. This series proves to be high adventure and high octane action with a side of Alpha Males. I can't wait for the next book in this exciting series.

Review: DEVIL AND THE DEEP (Deep Six, Book 2) by Julie Ann Walker Publication Date: July 5, 2016 Genre: Romantic Suspense Reviewed by: Reading in Pajamas/ Donna Rated: 5 Stars Another dashing tale of daring-do on the high seas. Seriously, it was so much fun to read the exploits of this group of x-SEAL hotties. Between the edge of my seat action and the hot romance, I couldn’t put it down. Maddy was made for Bran and it was fun watching her prove it to him amidst all the chaos. Overall it was fun and made me so anxious for the next one. *Review copy provided by Sourcebooks in exchange for an honest review.

A former Navy SEAL had rescued Maddy once before, and they developed a relationship. Through his own stubbornness, he tried to forget her and move on with his life. Unfortunately, a sunken treasure ship is a goal for a few. Too bad someone wants to kidnap Maddie. Navy SEAL Bran to the resuce. Without his knowing who, he finds Maddie in the same situation again, in need of rescue. While the story starts out about a treasure hunt, the majority seems to gear towards their relationship and the past, and what type of relationship may or may not happen now and in the future. Well written and easy to follow with quite the cast of characters, there is something for everyone.

The first book in this series, Hell or High Water, earned a 5 star read from me. I couldn't believe how awesome it was, great dialogue and action that just swept me away! So I was super excited to dive into book 2. We met our heroine, Maddy Powers in book one, when the guys saved the yacht she was on from modern day pirates. I liked Maddy when we met her. She was scared to death, but did her best to keep up the illusion that she wasn't. Her spunky attitude in the face of danger, earned her kudos from me. The book starts about 3 months following the Maddy's pirate adventure. Bran and Maddy have been corresponding during this time, and now Maddy has written to him that she will be coming from Texas to the Dry Tortugas, about 15 nautical miles from the island the team is living on, with 3 scholarship winners for a camping trip. She has invited him to come by and see them, and maybe talk to the girls about the guys search for the Santa Cristina. Sounds like an nice little trip, right? Something sweet and easy, and a chance for Maddy and Bran to have some face time? Yeah, no. Everything starts out okay, but then a group of guys with machine guns show up, intending to kidnap Maddy. Pfft. Like Bran is going to let that happen. He is a SEAL after all. Bran and Mason manage to rescue Maddy, but the girls were taken hostage. And thus begins an action packed game of hide and seek on the island. Maddy insists on going along since she actually knows the island and it's history, while Bran growls and goes just a bit caveman. I had a fantastic time with this book. As with the first book, once I started it, I didn't want to put it down. Luckily, I planned ahead and had a nice block of time set aside with no interruptions. And again, I just zoomed through the book not coming up for air until the book was done. It was an amazing read and worth everyone of it's 5 stars. Sourcebooks Casablanca and Netgalley provided me with this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

Bran is a former Navy SEAL and believes that he doesn't need a long term relationship with a woman because of who is father is. How intensely Bran's father and mother loved each other. After rescuing Maddy in the previous book after her father's yacht was taken over. Bran has never felt a connection to another woman or the desire to stay in contact with them, Maddy is the only one to tempt him with the idea. Maddy is taking three scholarship winners to Dry Tortuga on a trip. The trip quickly goes sideways when 4 men come to kidnap Maddy and the girls. Mason, Alex, and Bran are off the coast to search for a sunken ship found by LT when they over hear gun fire. Mason and Bran quickly come up with a plan to rescue them. I loved Maddy's and Bran's interactions over the course of the book. Alex and Mason are hilarious characters, those two fight like a married couple and it doesn't help that she is constantly talking. I can't wait to read a book about those two. I liked Maddy's perseverance, determination, and strength throughout the entire book. Even after tragedies and the terror of the day she refused to cry in front of anyone. Bran and Mason true to their SEAL training was able to save Maddy from the clutches of bad guys again. If you like action, alpha ex-military guys, and romance then this is the book/series for you. Happy Reading! Received ARC in exchange for honest review from NetGalley

The Deep Six men like to have their fun, but they can get serious in a hurry. We met Maddy previously where she was involved in a similar situation. However, this time it's more serious. Bran to the rescue but it's not all that easy. I love the relationship between these two. I'm now looking forward to the next book in the series.

Bran and Maddy had met before and had shared a scorching kiss. Since then they’ve kept in contact via email while he’s in a remote area on a job. When she gets an opportunity to be in the same vicinity as him, she lets him know. When he finally gives in to see her, what was to be a visit turns into a rescue mission. Unfortunately, I really didn’t like the characters even though the plot sounded interesting. I just didn’t feel that Bran acted in the way SEALs act in similar books. I found it very off-putting and made it hard to get too far in to the book. It just wasn’t for me. **I received an ARC of this story in exchange for an honest review

**I received an ebook from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.** --------------------------- STEAMY! That's my one-word summarization! This book is chock full of action, romance, and sex - innuendos, foreplay, and fantasies - both stated and acted. I had a hard time putting the book down. ;) Bran is a dark and brooding male protagonist with a past that runs deeper then his SEAL training. Maddy is a stubborn, outspoken, wealthy female protagonist who doesn't let go when she sees something she wants. Their personalities have them on a crash course that started when Bran helped rescue for from kidnappers, and has continued via email and calls since. Bran doesn't feel he is good enough for Maddy, and Maddy has been unsure of his feelings because he keeps running hot and cold. Circumstances have pushed them together as another kidnapping attempt happens, and now they have to figure out what is what. Loved the story. It was a quick read, and a good one. I look forward to reading more of this series.

I have read a lot of Julie Ann Walker books. I have loved some stories, struggled with others, but mainly enjoyed most of them. There are some characteristics, that seems to be in most of her stories. There are lots of inner reflections, random thoughts the characters are having, going from lust filled panting, to pop culture quotes, to completely irrelevant pondering. The humor is off the wall, and fitting for the younger generation, surprising on the thirty-something ex-SEALs. The secondary couple that we get glimpses of, that seems to be in every story, is often more interesting and intriguing than the primary one, and you are left to yearn for the next story, hoping it will be them. With these things in mind and the fact that I have always gone back for the next story, I will say, that I really struggled with this one. And mainly for all those reasons I mentioned above. I liked Alex and Mason, the secondary, pudding possible romance coming ahead couple. I liked them as characters, I enjoyed them together, and they were easy to connect with , the short times we heard the tale from their point of view. I had a harder time to connect with Bran and Maddy. I liked them both in the previous story, I was all ready to root for them and their HEA, and I didn't get there. I wasn't connecting with them, I didn't feel the connection between them, and I was bored. The inner reflections they were having, was like being with a group of people, who all have ADHD symptoms, and just can't focus, get it together, and survive the attacks. In a middle of the action, they are standing there lusting after each other, while being shot at. All that took any possible intensity, fear and danger away from the story, leaving me as a reader wanting. I love a good banter between characters, humor in the story, and some comic relief in intense situations, but here, in my opinion, it went too far. I also missed the rest of the team, maybe they could have brought some more balance into the chaos Bran and Maddy was making with the undeniable lust. So, I liked Alex and Mason, the few glimpses of the team, the support and advice they give each other, and their life on the tiny island. I know the author can write some seriously intense suspense and deadly action. I know she can write steamy romance without making it dull. There were dead bodies here as well, it just seemed like no one cared, also, it seemed like it was completely unnecessary aim to kill in the situation they were in. If you are a movie buff, who enjoys quotes from your favorite films, and use them in real life situations, if you enjoy Lethal Weapon movie type sophomoric humor, and silly banter in life and death moments, you are going to like this story well, I personally wanted little bit more of a story, and less nonsensical silliness. ~ Two Spoons with a teaspoon on the side

Yo Ho, Yo Ho... I do love a good pirate tale! Add in a steamy romantic thriller and I'm hooked! "Where's the fun in that?" Six retired Navy SEALS. One sunken Spanish galleon. Millions in gold and silver coins lying on the ocean floor. And a past that refuses to let the guys of Deep Six Salvage forget the Navy SEAL motto:"'The only easy day was yesterday…" DEVIL AND THE DEEP by Julie Ann Walker is an addictive romantic thriller! Both leads shined along with a second couple who I sincerely hope will be featured in a future book. Besides the present day action, the author incorporates an intriguing search for pirate's booty via snippets from the past. After reading through to the end, I went to sleep dreaming about the book's yummy, extremely satisfying HEA and the hunt for the lost treasure of the Santa Cristina. This is the first book I've read by Julie Ann Walker, but certainly not the last, as I already have the first two books from this series on my reader ready to go! This is the story of retired ex-Navy SEAL-turned-treasure-hunter Brandon 'Bran' Pallidino and southern oil heiress and philanthropist Madison 'Maddy' Powers. Bran is a dreamy 'handsome as a hatchet' tortured alpha hero who is extremely adverse to any long-term romantic relationship because of his past. He has reconciled to himself that he doesn't really have a relationship with Maddy as things stand now. They share a mad love of the cinema and are comfortable talking about almost anything. They exchange an extraordinary amount of emails daily and they have the occasional three-hour satellite phone conversation, but the distance between them maintains an inherent casualness that he remains comfortable with. But, to Maddy, their extensive communications and the ease they have with each other are harbingers of a hotter relationship to come. She craves more of Bran, so she has planned an outing with three young female proteges to Fort Jefferson on Tortuga Island which is located very close to Wayfarer Island where Bran is. Because of communication difficulties, it is at the last minute that a threesome consisting of Bran, Mason, another retired SEAL, and Alexandra Merriweather, the treasure hunters' historian, sail to Tortuga from Wayfarer to meet up with Maddy. As they near Tortuga, they hear gunshots and Bran goes ballistic with worry for Maddy. First of all, you should know that Bran and Maddy share a previous history. It is mentioned in this book, but I believe it is detailed in a prior book(s). I don't know all the specifics, but Maddy had been previously kidnapped and Bran had heroically rescued her. After rescuing her, they had shared a kiss... and Bran has been fighting his feelings for Maddy ever since. I will admit that it took me a few chapters to vest in Bran’s & Maddy’s story. I'm sure that, if I had already read the previous books, I would have been vested from the get-go. Even so, and even though DEVIL AND THE DEEP is the second book in the series, it can be enjoyed as a stand-alone if that is your preference. I certainly did! DEVIL AND THE DEEP is well-plotted and well-written. It positively thrums with danger and the romance is steamy!!!! I would recommend DEVIL AND THE DEEP to anyone who loves romantic thrillers set in exotic locales liberally spiced with sexy banter! My full review is posted at Reading Between The Wines Book Club.

DEVIL AND THE DEEP is action-filled adventure with a heavy helping of humor that left me laughing so hard I was in tears and was a very fun introduction to Ms. Walker's writing for me. I have never read any of Ms. Walker's books before Devil and the Deep but the idea of SEALs searching for treasure is a very unique and unusual one, enough to intrigue me. I went in with no preconceptions and I'm glad becasue I really enjoyed it. Maddy Powers and Bran Palladino shared a scorching kiss in the previous installment of the series, one that has remained on their minds and they have formed a bond based on their shared experiences and the sizzling attraction between them, but Maddy wants more from Bran and if her planned excursion with the scholarship students from her family's foundation places her within reach of Bran, well, that's just a coincidence. Bran knows that the apple does not fall far from the tree and has vowed not to get involved in any long term relationship, to avoid the cycle of abuse that his parents lived in, but Maddy Powers, her sassy, feisty personality and her hot body threaten his resolve and make him behave in ways that are not normal to him, but he and his buddy are her only hope when she and her charges find themselves in some trouble, especially when it looks like more than a run of the mill attack. Okay, so I had one question: why would Maddy, knowing that her daddy was a rich as Croesus, step outside her home without a contingent of armed-to-the-teeth bodyguards? Especially when she wasn't packing heat like a good Texas gal? That said, I enjoyed her character, her runaway mouth and her southernisms which while sometimes corny, never failed to give me a good laugh. Bran on the other hand took some warming up to. I'm not really a fan of the tortured hero, especially when that torture is self-inflicted and even though he had good reason for his decision, I felt like his reservations were overblown to give him an out from commitment. In spite of that, I love a man who knows how to handle himself in battle and I enjoyed that he was all about keeping Maddy safe. I like how the author combined history and adventure with suspense and I'm looking forward to the rest of the series, including the treasure hunting. I enjoyed the secondary characters a lot, especially the teenagers and Alex and with the glimpse of Alex and Mason that we got in this book, I can't wait for more of their own story. I think that anyone who loves adventure (think Indiana Jones), suspense or action would enjoy this book. Even though this book can be read as a stand alone, I think that it would be best to start from the beginning of the series. ⭐ ⭐ Provided by Netgalley in Exchange for an Honest Review ⭐ ⭐ Judging a Book by it's Cover: Standard fare for a RomSus novel. Bold color choices, Muscled hottie in a tight tank top holding a gun. Synopsis is weak. It does not do the magnitude of the book justice. Looking Deeper: Third-person POV. We first meet Maddy in HELL OR HIGH WATER when she and her yacht crew are hijacked and the Deep Six guys stumble across her boat while also out hunting for objects well below the Gulf's surface. When it's "mission accomplished", Bran and Maddy part ways after a smoldering kiss and go back to their everyday lives until emails and sat phone calls don't seem to be enough anymore. Maddy devises a way to travel to a nearby location and invites him over on a whim. Bran's too hung up on his personal demons to accept the invite, until goaded by Mason and Alex. Together, the three of them set sail for the destination only to discover that things have - once again - taken a turn toward sh*t central for Maddy... and Bran's determined to save the day. If you are looking for a well-balanced Romance with Suspense, this is not the book for you. This book is 80% or more Action and Suspense mixed with Alex pestering the crap out of Mason (mainly) with her constant chattering. There is a very slow-boil and plenty sexual tension throughout. Many laugh-out-loud moments were found. The chemistry between characters was enjoyable, as was their dialogue and overall interactions. The plot was detail oriented without being smothering, it flowed extremely well and kept the pages turning. While there were some internal conflicts that were resolved by the end, there were a few outside issues left open - most likely to continue on in the next installment of the series... makes you wonder if it may be Mason and Alex or another couple mentioned at the very end [no names = no spoiler]. I would have to say that the predictability was rather low, there was really not a lot of guessing to be had, but neither were there any fun surprises or plot twists. The conclusion was wrapped up pretty good and led into a few possible future books. I love that, once again, we get a glance into the Santa Cristina's 1600's story at the beginning and end of the modern day novel. I look forward to the next book in the series and recommend - for maximum benefit - that this series be read in order STARTING with the prequel novella, HOT AS HELL, followed by the above mentioned HELL OR HIGH WATER. It's an amazing, action-packed adventure ride that you'll NOT want to get off of. *Note: This story does contain some scenes of graphic violence. Readers sensitive to casualties from firearms and/or blades need to consider if this is the right fit for you. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Rating: [R] ~ Score: 4.4 ~ Stars: 4.5 -------------------------------------------------------------------------

Full throttle kicked up a notch…or twenty! This is my second read of the series and I love its fast-paced storyline and incredibly witty dialogue. I also love the strong female characters and the stubborn-as-hell alpha males. Bran has some serious demons that keeps him constantly on guard and in check. He’s sworn off relationships and will NEVER get serious with a woman, no matter how tempting it is. Maddy has gotten under Bran’s skin and he’s finding it harder and harder to keep her at bay. When he finds out she’s in trouble, Bran moves Heaven and earth to keep her from harm. But keeping her close proves to be too much of a temptation, especially when the monster inside him is threatening to be unleashed. Bran doesn’t want to hurt Maddy, but letting her go is not an option. Can they remain “friends” or will a night of passion obliterate the walls Bran’s so painstakingly kept in place? WOW! What a wild ride! Bran and Maddy are a perfect fit. His Jersey boy attitude with her no-nonsense Southern belle honesty. Maddy is never afraid to go toe-to-toe with Bran and I love that she fought for them and for what she wanted despite all Bran’s warnings to keep her away. Most importantly, she understood and respected Bran’s wishes despite her own heartache. I loved them! There was also a secondary romance-of-sorts starting to brew between the Southie, Mason and the team’s historian and resident motor mouth, Alex. He’s silent and brooding and she’s vibrant and sassy. They are a riot together and I do hope things work out for them. We’ll have to wait and see. This is a great series full of excitement, danger, suspense, hilarity and steamy passion and I highly recommend it to every reader! ***I was gifted an eBook copy from the publisher via Net Galley in exchange for an honest review. This is a great book; this book is part of the Deep Six series written by Julie Ann Walker. Maddy Powers's life revolves around cocktail parties, political fundraisers, and charity events-but she can't forget the daring former SEAL who came crashing into her life a few months ago...or the scorching kiss they shared before he disappeared into the deep blue sea. Bran Pallidino carries a dark secret-one that forced him to push Maddy away. But when she's taken hostage during a trip to the Caribbean, the men of Deep Six Salvage embark on a dangerous mission to save Maddy. This is a great book with a wonderful story and well developed characters. This book will keep you reading long into the night. If you are looking for a great book, then you need to read this book. I am looking forward to reading the next book by this great author. A Review copy was provided to me in exchange for a fair and honest review. NUMBER OF HEARTS: 3 3/4 Devil in the Deep is book two in Ms. Walker’s Deep Six series. In Devil in the Deep we pick up a few months after the events from book one Hell or High Water. These books are connected but I think you will be okay if you have not read book one (but you should :) ). We get to catch up with Bran and Maddy in Devil in the Deep. These two have been keeping in touch via emails. But now Maddy is going to be in Bran’s neck of the woods and she has invited him to come visit her. Little did she know how important that invite would turn out to be. Bran has been fighting his feelings for Maddy since the moment he met her. But when Bran lands on the island where Maddy is and sees a gun pointed at her he snaps just a little. This was a fun book. I enjoyed watching Bran and Maddy finally realize just how good they are together. I also really enjoyed the interaction between Mason & Alex (can’t wait for this story). I can’t wait to see what is next in this series. But I do hope that there is not another kidnapping scheme. I love the way that this author balances suspense with romance, chemistry with history, and friends with moments that will never be forgotten. All the while, she develops an intricate story that kept me on my toes and set it in such a manner that I could picture all of it. I love the way that the Santa Christina was integral to the lives of these characters. The way that it actually served to increase the suspense of the tale, adding a second storyline for readers to become enmeshed in. It also ties the series together through more than simply the characters that Walker creates. The characters in this novel were larger than life, but at the same time very real. They were hard to look away from and easy to love, while always being less than perfect. This humanity made them so endearing. The dynamic between Bran and Maddie had me in stitches, followed in a close second by Mason and Alex. Walker has created a fantastic second instalment in this series. She seamlessly draws everything together while keeping me on my toes. It was a lot of fun and I definitely can’t wait for more. Please note that I received a complimentary copy of this work in exchange for an honest review

Devil and the Deep is the second in Julie Ann Walker’s modern date treasure hunter series. As with the previous installment, the action is fast, the hero is hot, and the heroine can hold her own. This book brings together Maddie and Bran. We met both in the first installment, her father’s cruise ship was taken over by pirates and Bran saves the day, and this novel gives readers the promised HEA. The action mirrors the first as once again Maddie is taken hostage, almost, and Bran has to rescue her. The fact both characters notice and comment on it keeps it from being a repeat or trite. This is somewhat of a locked room novel. The timeline is very compressed; kudos to Walker for the plotting on this one. The main action takes place on an island and the characters are very limited. Though we get brief glimpses of LT at the beginning and the end, this is a fairly self-contained story with only Bran and Mason of the Deep Six guys on board. While I missed having the rest of the crew around, it was fun to see the focus on these two. The interplay among the characters is great, while also giving lots of time to get to know them individually. I have been waiting for this book since I finished the first one. Happily the second book did not disappoint. Though little progress was made on the overarching treasure hunt, this book does move the story of the Deep Six crew along nicely. The only problem is now I have to wait for book three. Copy received from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

I absolutely fell in love with Bran and Maddy. The second book in the Deep Six series, I found that Maddy was a fun and caring person that knew what she wanted and went for it. Bran, on the other hand, was such a great but damaged character, and would give his all to protect Maddy. In this book, it was all about beating the odds of a kidnapping attempt, violence, a burgeoning relationship between two people, while Bran faces his past with help from Maddy, and just a great relationship with the retired Navy Seal and the woman he must save. There was not a lot of interaction with the rest of the retired Navy Seal Crew except for Mason, who was with Bran on this one, but I look forward to reading more in this series. I hope that Mason's story is next. Julie Ann Walker writes great romantic suspenseful stories which just happens to be my favorite genre. Thank you to NetGalley and Sourcebooks for gifting me with a copy only asking me for a review. This is my honest opinion and I highly recommend "Devil and the Deep" 4.5 Stars!!

3.25 stars---DEVIL AND THE DEEP is the second installment in Julie Ann Walker’s contemporary, adult DEEP SIX romantic, suspense series focusing on a group of former Navy SEALs who currently own and operate a civilian marine salvage business. The DEEP SIX series is a spinoff from Julie Ann’s BLACK KNIGHTS INC series. This is former Navy SEAL Bran Palladino, and heiress Maddy Powers’ story line. DEVIL AND THE DEEP can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. There is a running theme throughout the series as the Deep Six team set up business on Wayfarer Island to search for a five hundred year old sunken treasure and the missing Santa Cristina purported to sit on the ocean floor. Told from several third person perspectives DEVIL AND THE DEEP follows two paths: the friends to lovers romance between Bran Palladino and Maddy Powers; and the attempted abduction of our story line heroine- an heiress whose family is worth billions of dollars making Maddy a prime target for kidnappers and ransom demands. Maddy and Bran have been emailing one another since Bran’s rescue of Maddy three months earlier (Hell or High Water #1) from a group of international terrorists but Bran believes he is not worthy of love, and is unable to give Maddy what it is she wants. Maddy, in the meantime, is escorting three scholarship winners to a nearby island, and is hoping for some one on one time with the former Navy SEAL. What ensues is the rescue of Maddy by the man that she loves when she is once again targeted by an unknown assailant, and several more attempts to take down the people responsible for threatening their lives. The relationship between Bran and Maddy began three months earlier when Bran rescued Maddy from marauding terrorists. In the ensuing time, Bran and Maddy have kept in contact with another adding friendship to their list of relationship goals. When Maddy offers Bran something more, Bran continues to push Maddy away believing his dark and dangerous past will rear its’ volatile head. The $ex scenes are intimate and steamy; Bran will only accept a friends with benefits relationship from the woman with whom he has fallen in love. There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including the three young women Maddy is escorting through an historical tour of the Dry Tortugas Island. We are re-introduced to one of Bran’s partners at Deep Six-Mason-who may or may not have an interest in Alex-the team’s new historian and translator of ancient scripts-their building story line took up quite a bit of page time in the book. The requisite bad guys are numerous, as well as a couple of familiar faces to our story line heroine. I did have some issues with the author’s continuous, non-stop use of metaphors, movie line quotes, innuendos, euphemism, southernisms, and clichés. Julie Ann Walker has used these types of ‘descriptors’ and clichés in her previous books and series (including the Black Knights Inc) but the copious references, cliches and comparisons to movies, metaphors, and books was overwhelming, and I quickly lost interest. It was a distraction and felt more like filler than actual conversation or story. The humor was lost in the repetition and redundancy. DEVIL AND THE DEEP is an interesting story line but a bit scattered and uneven. The premise is entertaining; the characters are a bit hapless and lost; the romance is a slow build to love.

Former SEAL Bran Palladino and Maddy Powers are as different as two people can be but there is something between them that can't be explained. Bran's past and the secrets he carries won't allow him to go after her but when he learns she's in trouble he's the first one out the door! Maddy wants Bran but knows he has walls she will never be able to climb. When a fun island trip takes a nightmarish turn Maddy know Bran is the only one who can help her. Will he come? Not a fav of mine but overall a decent read. I found the story a bit jumpy and not the smooth easy pace I like. Definitely filled with sizzle and adventure though so if you enjoy those this one's for you!
