That's what put me off to start with but I went ahead and read it anyway. But Gemma isn't really a Goth, she's just paying back her Dad by cutting her hair short and dying it black, and putting weird make-up on because he married Shelley. This book is really about the soccer and Gemma's attempts to get rid of Shelley and her daughter Portia. She gets her teacher Mr Cassidy on side. I like the idea that the woman sports teacher Mrs Lawford is against girls soccer but the man teacher isn't, and I like the fights with Tyrone Collins and his friends. Tyrone happens to be Shelley's nephew too! Then there's the mystery with Shelley and Mr Cassidy to clear up. Just what is going on between those two?? I didn't understand a lot of the English slang to start with but by the end I guessed what words like 'bog' meant! This is a really good read with lots going on, Gemma's rebellion, her dislike of Shelley, trying help Portia diet, her fights with Tyrone, and the mystery with Shelley and Mr Cassidy. It's got a surprising end!
