Vicky Skinner’s HOW TO BREATHE UNDERWATER is a coming of age story that deals with a little bit of everything, and it has Kate, a super strong 16-year-old girl to walk you through them all. I really enjoyed this book. It dealt with everyday adult problems from a teenager’s perspective, and what its like for them to go through these issues too. HOW TO BREATHE UNDERWATER deals with lies, divorce, anxiety, depression, love, and death on the surface of the story, but it’s what’s below the surface that makes it a great story: growing up, life-changing decisions, and being strong enough to become who you are and want to be. While this is a young adult romance, there’s more to it than just kisses and angst between a couple of hormonal teenagers. Kate learns to stand up for herself and do what she thinks is right, while Michael deals with growing up way too fast due to an ailing parent. HOW TO BREATHE UNDERWATER has its fun-teen moments, and real-life events that make it a good read for any age group. Dani's Score out of 5: (4/5) *** Thank you to the author, Vicky Skinner, and NetGalley for giving me a copy of HOW TO BREATHE UNDERWATER in exchange for my honest review. ***

This one made me all kinds of nervous! A story - that at its core is raw and real - but also shows how sometimes second chances come around because we weren't ready the first time.

Oh, my heart. What a deep, thoughtful look into love and loss in its many forms. Everyone can relate to Kate and Michael's struggles and triumphs in some way or another, even if you're not a star swimmer or above-average salsa dancer. :) I can't wait for this book to be out in the world so that I can recommended it highly (and face it out at every bookstore I see it at!)

This book is well-written with characters that make you want to keep turning the page to find out what is happening in their topsy-turvy lives! It challenges the reader to deal with relationships between friends, siblings, parents, and love interests. The story is relatable and can be seen in lots of lives of teens today. This is the story of Kate whose life is turned upside down when she finds out her father is cheating on her mother ultimately ending in their divorce. To make matters worse she is completely devastated because she has been spending all her energy trying to please the one person who is now the cause of her world being blown to pieces. She, her sister, and mother must now try to make it through the stresses of a new city, new school, and new job. Things look promising when she meets the boy next door but will soon find he is not as polished as he appears. I would highly recommend this book to anyone struggling through relationship issues. It may not help resolve them but it will help to know that there is life after them. How To Breathe Underwater will help us to see that we all have something we can go to when our worlds implode.
