Winchell Dear knows that something is about to happen, he just doesn't know what. Winchell is a professional poker player who lives on his ranch and remembers. He remembers his life, old friends and his lost love but things are happening that are beyond his control.I liked this story. Waller's writing is very descriptive and paints a picture. His characters are interesting and alive. My only complaint is that it was hard to pin down the time frame of the story. Sometimes it seemed very wild west like but then the modern aspect is there.

This Robert Waller book was a little different from the others but a very good read -- really grabs you from the first page and won't let you quit -- a short book, as novels go, but so very well worth your time -- men and women! If you are a RW fan you simply must give this one a try!!

I have read all of Robert James Waller's books and this one almost beat Bridges of Madison County. The writing is very poetic and lyrical. I finished the book on a Friday night and picked it up to read again on Saturday. The first time I read the same book twice in one weekend. Great job RJW
