It's really a good thing that "Stone", Lord Haverstone and Mariah Thorncroft are completely distinterested in each other--that way they can relax and just be friends. Or at least that's what they think. It all starts when Mariah's well-intentioned brother sees the earl lose a small fortune at cards. Assuming this means he's in need of funds, and being a bit drunk, he approaches the lord and tells him about his sister's dowry. Stone, amused, offers him an offhand invitation to his house party, which he promptly forgets about.Despite the lack of a written invitation, Mariah's mother insists that they attend the house party, seeing it as a perfect opportunity to further her ambition to see her daughter wed to someone with a title.Mariah inadvertently interrupts Stone's liaison with a married woman, and thus begins their friendship, with the first of many candid conversations. Mariah is not interested in her mother's plans, and Stone is too much of a rogue to interest her anyway, and Stone thinks he's more interested in dalliances with experienced wives and widows, so a friendship is safe.*sigh* I'm doing a terrible job of describing this story. It often happens when I really enjoy something. What I liked most about Moonlight and Mischief is the friendship that developed between Mariah and Stone, and their mistaken belief that they weren't at all interested in each other. The secondary characters were also very entertaining--from the sweetly heartbreaking secondary romance of Mariah's brother, to the young man with a crush on her mother. Moonlight and Mischief is suprisingly rich and detailed for such a short book.
