MY LADY GAMESTER is a Regency Romance about the collision between Miss Atalanta James, a gentlewoman- turned-cardsharp, and Richard Stanton, the Earl of Stoke and a former cavalry officer. Atalanta is driven by the need to help her family, impoverished by her father in one ruinous night of gambling. Stoke is drawn to her against his will, even as he begins to realize that he and his family are increasingly threatened by her quest. This is, quite simply, one of the best Regency Romances I have ever read. It would be a remarkable performance for the tenth novel of an established author--for a first novel, it is extraordinarily rare. All the pieces of the book fit together perfectly. The characters are beautifully drawn, and the personal conflict between them arises both from their situations and their personalities, keeping them apart even as they feel increasing pulled together. The plot is very tight, each new scene fitting exactly as it moves the story forward, revealing more about Atalanta and her past. Stoke is an honorable man caught between love and duty Atalanta, a brilliant and passionate woman who does what she needs to do. The secondary characters are sketched with economy and wit, and the denouement is entirely satisfying. While this book is more serious than many Regencies, it is true to both the period and the genre. The card playing is convincing without being overwhelming. There is a good deal of detail about the British cavalry in the Napoleonic wars, and also a very convincing scene at Covent Garden Theatre. This book is a gem that all fans of Regency Romance should read and enjoy.
