Description: This is a resource/guide for midwives and women's health advanced practice nurses for providing primary care for their patients.
Purpose: The purpose of the book is to support the 1997 goal of the American College of Nurse Midwives statement for nurse midwives to provide comprehensive, integrated, and holistic care to women. This is a worthy objective as many women use their nurse midwife as their primary care provider. Many nurse midwives did not receive training for comprehensive care during their initial educational program. The author's objectives are met. The book is divided into chapters to address the comprehensive health needs of women throughout their lifespan.
Audience: The book is written for nurse midwives and advanced practice nurses who specialize in women's health care. It is written for students in training as well as nurses in practice. The authors are certified nurse midwives who practice in the clinical and educational setting.
Features: The book defines primary care and details its components. Health screening, immunizations, physical care, emotional care, and social care are covered. This is followed by diagnosis and treatment of common health problems of each body system. Illustrations in the dermatology section are helpful in understanding the content.
Assessment: This is a comprehensive resource and guide for nurse midwives and women's health nurse practitioners whether in the student role or the experienced clinician role. It is excellent as a reference and a basis for understanding provision of primary healthcare to women.
