Reviewed by Lit Amri for Readers' Favorite It was supposed to be a fun night out dancing with her friend. Ava did not expect to be abducted and taken aboard the Center Space station to be a ‘kitten’ – a sex slave. Voc, a deadly assassin, rescued her and together with Bob the computer tech, they took the Rosh, a powerful spacecraft, and escaped. Ava’s life was never the same again and her journey was just about to begin. The Prince of Death is the first installment of Into the Darkness sci-fi series by Teresa Marie Manning. The action started right from the prologue. I had to reread the beginning chapters, particularly chapter one and two, to grasp Voc’s background, his relationship with the Master, and Deevo’s cryptic message to the assassin. Even after finishing the book, I am not sure if I understand Voc as well as I had hoped. There is something complex about him so I decided to just accept his enigmatic personality as it is. I sympathize with Ava as the ‘kitten’ mind altering process did have some impact on her senses. I feel that she did lose some parts of her identity that made her – unwillingly, if I may say – become infatuated with Voc. On the other hand, Bob is a welcome comic relief, as I always prefer a degree of humor in any stories that I read. That said, characterization is good, coupled with well-written dialogue. Action is plentiful, which no doubt would make some readers breathless just reading about them. All in all, a great debut for a series.
