Description: This is a manual on reduced-port laparoscopic surgery (RPLS), written by experts in this narrow niche of minimally-invasive surgery. It has extensive descriptions of the various techniques, available instruments and equipment, and detailed, illustrated descriptions of individual operations, from the very simple to the highly complex.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a current reference and technical manual of the different kinds of RPLS and step-by-step instructions for procedures for which these techniques can be used. These objectives are worthy, albeit not for a wide audience. The book meets the objectives for advanced laparoscopic surgeons. Other readers may be interested, but these procedures should not be attempted by trainees or general surgeons until they have mastered advanced laparoscopic surgery.
Audience: The authors intend this book for practicing surgeons, surgical residents, and medical students. However, as noted above, it is most appropriate for advanced laparoscopic surgeons who wish to expand on already mastered techniques. It certainly will be of interest to the other readers, just not as a technical manual.
Features: The first several chapters are dedicated to defining and describing the various different forms of reduced-port laparoscopic surgery, from SILS to single-incision-robotic surgery. Next there is a good overview of options in instrumentation, including ports, scopes, and instruments, as well as access techniques. The bulk of the manual is dedicated to detailed technical descriptions of individual operations using RPLS, which could serve as a preoperative preparation guide for surgeons wanting to use these techniques. These descriptions, along with the accompanying illustrations, are the book's best features. The disadvantage of the book is the small audience who could use these technical descriptions in their practice.
Assessment: This is a high-quality book, well written and well referenced. It will be useful for advanced laparoscopic surgeons who wish to expand their practice to include RPLS or SILS, or to learn techniques which might be transferable to robotic surgery.
