Find this review and more at Lusty Penguin Reviews! Gifts of Honor, a contemporary military romance anthology by Stacy Gail and Rebecca Crowley, contains heart-wrenching stories of love, second chances, and forgiveness. Stacy Gail’s “Starting from Scratch” tells the story of injured Army Ranger Sully Jax and his wife, Lucy Crabtree. Returning from his last tour of duty with retrograde amnesia, Sully remembers everyone from his past, everyone except his wife, Lucy. Sully, definitely an alpha male, takes defending his country seriously which makes him hero. But, Sully is human too, and when he divorces Lucy, he hurts her even more than when he announced his last tour of duty. Sully is a complicated character because he still feels drawn to Lucy and inadvertently hurts her every time he sees her. With all of Sully’s struggles, you can’t help but fall in love with him. Lucy is a strong-willed character who truly loves Sully and misses him dearly even though he is home, which just drew her character to me. Gail, with her graceful writing style, beautifully and realistically shows the struggles of both characters—Sully with his lost memories and Lucy with her memories intact. Sully and Lucy are an endearing couple, and the stunning and absolutely wonderful way Sully gets his memories of Lucy back as well as his heartfelt apology will bring tears to your eyes. With memorable characters and a captivating romance, “Starting from Scratch” is a definite must read for the Christmas season. I received an eBook copy of the book for the purpose of an honest review. I was not compensated for this review, and all conclusions are my own responsibility.

This is a wonderful story of recovery, trust, and new beginnings. It has loss, heartache, and strength along with equal parts love, redemption, and understanding. I loved the characters. Sully is a great guy that I just adored and Lucy is so strong and selfless that I just wanted to give her a hug and tell her that everything is going to be all right. It is a really fast read that is full of great characters, a few steamy love scenes, and an honest appreciation for our military members and their many sacrifices. I am really impressed with the strong writing and complete story telling that is found in this short heartfelt story by Stacy Gail. You can purchase Starting from Scratch and Hero’s Homecoming separately or packaged together in GIFTS OF HONOR.  *I received an advance readers copy of this story in exchange for an honest review*

In the first chapter there was bad language that distracted from the story. After reading the second chapter and the F bomb had been dropped a few times , I chose not to read any further. Not appropriate for teens, so in my books I won't read it either.

Starting from Scratch is an amazing story of a sacrifice made by army wife Lucy Crabtree. She looses her husband due to a head trauma during service to his country and their heart breaking reunion. The attraction between Lucy and Sully is undeniable, but how would you feel if your husband didn't remember you and has forgotten everything about your relationship. Could you open your heart again?  Emotionally jarring, Starting from Scratch gripped me from the first few pages and held on tight till the very end. I laughed and cried right along side Lucy. Stacy Gail masterfully captures the many sacrifices and supports the spouses, of men and woman in service to our country, must provide. Of course this is a fictional tale, but their paths are not an easy one to face...Gail vividly creates the picture of the strength and courage of heroes who must stay behind when their loved ones are sent off to defend our country.  Starting from Scratch is a beautiful, moving, romance...a perfect Christmas happily ever after read. Starting From Scratch pulled me in immediately and I absolutely couldn’t put it down. Luckily it was a novella, so at less than 100 pages it didn’t take me long to read it, but since I wasn’t stopping until I was done that’s definitely a good thing. I felt for both Sully and Lucy, and it was so hard to watch them have to battle their feelings, their fears and their hurts, and figure out how to deal with each other. Each has such a unique and heartbreaking problem and it’s so hard to watch them have to battle themselves and one another as they try to find a way to live in the same town now that their life together is gone. It’s a devastating thing but one that Gail handles in a very intriguing way. It’s an emotionally difficult book, one that made me both happy and weepy, but when it was over I definitely was glad I’d gone on the journey with them. While the story line was great, the book was only 112 pages and the first 10 were not the story, too short.

I highly recommend this very well written love story. This book is about a wounded warrior who wakes up from a coma to see a woman he doesn’t remember. He finally asks her for a divorce because he thinks it isn’t fair to her to be with him. She grants it because there’s no point to be with someone who can’t remember her. He finally gets out of the hospital and returns to his home town and that’s where it gets interesting. Some of the verbiage is very funny, but there’s sadness also. All in all, it’s life. You really should read this feel good book and never underestimate the power of the cookie.
