Super Science Girls! (Girls Know How Series #4) based on 0 ratings. 2 reviews.
Super Science Girls is the fourth book in the Girls Know How series by author, Ellen Langas. Each book in the series portrays realistic characters and situations that pre-teens face as they negotiate their way through middle school friendships and difficulties. The books are tied to a potential career, and each book features an interview at the end with an inspirational, successful person relevant to that career. In Super Science Girls, the main character, Sylvia , is devastated when her plans for the summer, which include a yearly science camp, fall apart when her best friend, Kristen has other plans. The fissure in their friendship continues into the school year, as Kristen finds herself with a new friend group, and a new partner for the Science Fair, leaving Sylvia to fend for herself. Langas captivates the reader with a realistic portrayal of the girls and their interactions with their parents, teachers, and friends. The dialogue and situations are believable, and the plot takes some interesting turns. The strength of the book is the credibility of the characters and the situations. Langas interjects science education seamlessly, as the reader learns about about women scientists and science experiments. An added feature of this fourth book are interactive science word matches in addition to the career exploration form featured in all the books in the series. Super Science Girls is an appealing, interesting , and informative read.
This book is a wonderful way to show girls that they can be involved with the sciences through connections to a real life role model. The main character, Sylvia, makes for a wonderful character study.. Readers will easily relate to her situations and how she navigates the issues of being a 5th grader. Another great book in the series by Ellen Langas. Sally Bovell, Elementary Reading Specialist
