"A Princess of Mars" is the first in Burrough's famous Barsoom series. It is also his first novel, predating the Tarzan stories. Full of swordplay and daring feats, the story is considered a classic example of 20th century pulp fiction.
"The Gods of Mars" is the second of his Barsoom (Mars) series .
"Warlord of Mars" is the third book in the series.
"Thuvia, Maid of Mars" is the fourth book. In this novel the focus shifts from John Carter, Warlord of Mars, and Dejah Thoris of Helium, protagonists of the first three books in the series, to their son, Carthoris, prince of Helium, and Thuvia, princess of Ptarth.
"The Chessmen of Mars" continues the focus on the younger members of the family established by John Carter and Dejah Thoris. The heroine this time is their daughter Tara, princess of Helium, whose hand is sought by the gallant Gahan, Jed (prince) of Gathol. Both Helium and Gathol are prominent Barsoomian city states.
