An absolutely delightful read, possibly better than 'The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie.' I get the feeling that the modern readership for Muriel Spark's novels is not what it should be, which is a shame because she has quickly grown to be my favourite woman writer. This novel takes place in Italy, and is a wonderfully observed story of the problems the rich often face by the very fact of their wealth. Spark's language is so beautifully resolved, and her characters are so masterfully crafted, that every page really is a literal joy - pun shamefully intended.
I enjoyed the story as an ironic farce, but not sure I got the "parable" aspect of it touted on the cover?
