The breakout novel Unwritten: Serpent of Time was jam-packed with all the things I look for in a good curl-up: a layered story that grabs, images that put me right there, dynamic characters, a build-up of anticipation, and a sense that the writer isn’t taking this too seriously. Serpent of Time does an amazing job of that and more. There really is something for everyone here. The personalities of the characters are well-flushed, and I enjoyed learning their quirks. It was refreshing to see such dynamic people and backgrounds. The locations in the novel are described in such detail that it was easy to visualize the characters’ surroundings as they moved through lands and cities and dimensions. As another reviewer said, the writer obviously did his research. Serpent of Time flows from uncertainty to elation to devastation with a humor and pacing I've rarely seen in first novels. I actually found myself laughing out loud at parts (the first night Sionn and Whini spend in Iilediaweh and the salon scene come to mind), and many other scenes or lines stuck with me. And I loved the thoughtful undertones of social and personal responsibility the author infused into the story, as Whini and Sionn face (on a waaaay bigger scale!) decisions all of us are confronted with. A captivating adventure, this book is a must-read for, well, everyone.
