I served in RVN for 11 months. I read about Nam, Iraq, and Afghanistan extensively. I found this book to be one of the best I have read.

Enjoyable read of an ordinary young soldier trying to survive his one year tour of duty while growing up and trying to understand the world around him.

I know Glyn and have spent many hours talking with him about his experiences in Vietnam. Glyn is forthright and the integrity and humility that he offers up his experiences, in person or in writing, is very thought provoking for me. This book, the first in a trilogy, puts you in the middle of a young man's mind in Vietnam from end to end of his tour. It is a profound insight in to the sacrifice a veteran makes to his country in both mind and body, and one he continues to carry to this day. Having been reading military history for 40 years of my life, I strongly encourage you to consider reading this volume if you want feel what it was like on the ground as a private in Vietnam in both the heat of combat and the boredom of just living day to day in a war zone. Give it a read, even if this first volume of the three is the only one you consider.

I am a veteran of the Vietnam war and also a collector of Vietnam era books written by warriors who experienced intense combat and lived to write about their experiences. Glyn Haynie's book ranks at the very top of my collection because it is so authentic--brings back the noise, heat, and agony of jungle warfare. Haynie draws his reader into the battle, giving the reader an eye witness account of how it was in the field, in the outpost, in the hospital, and on R&R. When I finished the book, I felt like I had been to Vietnam again. An additional benefit of this excellent piece of literature is the valuable leadership lessons vividly demonstrated throughout the combat narrative. I have purchased a copy of this book for my grandson who will soon be commissioned as a second lieutenant in the US Army because there are lessons to be learned from this book that may not be self-evident in classroom discussions. Reader, this book will hold your attention and will be well worth your time to read.

An excellent memoir of a young soldier's year in Vietnam. Those of us who served, whether or not in Vietnam will find a connection to this work. For those who didn't serve, it's a great look at the trials and tribulations of the old Army of the Vietnam era. Hard to put down.

A great depiction of the the life of an infantry soldier in Vietnam. Provides an inside look into the interaction between soldiers both in combat and in day to day activities while serving in Vietnam. Illustrates the inner thoughts, fears and hopes, of a young soldier experiencing life changing events that will forever impact the person they will become.
