Overview

Driven by her lifelong interest in the practice of mindfulness and her commitment to the welfare of children everywhere, Goldie Hawn established the Hawn Foundation to support research into developing ways of helping children become healthy and eager learners who can reach their full potential. The program developed by her foundation, MindUP, now used by educators around the world, teaches children how their minds work and how their thoughts and feelings affect their behavior. It gives them the social and emotional tools to help them deal with stress and negative feelings, calm their minds, remain focused, develop compassion and empathy for others—and, ultimately, be happy.

As practical as it is inspiring, 10 Mindful Minutes embodies the essence of the incredible success of the MindUP program with its simple techniques like mindful breathing, sensing, and thinking. In easy-to-follow steps, it shows parents and children alike how to focus on feelings of gratitude, kindness, and optimism that will improve interpersonal relationships, increase performance through better concentration, and lead to emotionally healthy and happy lives.

Teaching Our Children to Help Themselves Be Happy

Across the country, the revolutionary MindUP program, which was developed under the auspices of the Hawn Foundation, is teaching children vital social and emotional skills, empowering them to manage and reduce their own stress—and helping them be happy.

Now, for the first time, its secrets are being shared with all parents and children in 10 Mindful Minutes.

Publishers Weekly
Hollywood icon Hawn is a mother of four and a grandmother whose Hawn Foundation supports the MindUP program in schools in the U.S., Canada, and Great Britain. Here, she collaborates with writer Holden to present elements of the program that parents can use in daily life with kids. The authors explain that mindfulness helps children develop social and emotional intelligence, resulting in greater awareness, less stress, and higher levels of happiness and empathy. Developed by brain experts, the program also helps children use their senses to hone their brain muscles; in a chapter called "Mindful Sensing," Hawn covers mindful listening, seeing, smelling, tasting, and movement with suggested activities appropriate for various ages to accompany each sense. Hawn explains how to help children use mindful breathing (she calls it her "secret sauce") to become more reflective and self aware, and gain emotional control. The practice, she asserts, requires only three minutes a day to create positive change. It also helps kids sleep better and manage stress and/or anger, among other benefits. In "Reflections" throughout the text, Hawn looks back on her own childhood and shares her personal experiences as a mother. Hawn's gentle, heartfelt approach to mothering and her mission to help children develop happier, healthier lives will be both useful and inspiring for parents. (Oct.)

"I saw how quickly the kids-and then the teachers-bought into the [MindUP] program and practices. The kids just got it right away, and seemed hungry for something that would help them manage the stresses in their life. . . . In my twenty years of measuring social-emotional learning quotients, I've never seen a program that works as well as this one."

Her book can help any adult – parent, grandparent, teacher – make double use of their moments with the children they love and have a terrific time while helping shape that child’s brain for a lifetime of resilience and happiness."
Deirdre Donahue
“An excellent guide that offers simple, effective ways for stressed parents to create calmer, kinder, happier families.”

The beauty of both of these books is that they help readers relieve stressful situations with simple, tailor-made exercises. The difference is in their intended audiences: licensed psychotherapist Bush writes for adults, and actor Hawn writes for parents guiding children. Bush offers 70 short exercises for when readers are stopped at a red light, taking a shower, or waiting in line. She reminds readers to roll out goodwill to fellow travelers, remember what matters in life, and release current worries by visualizing them going down the drain. Bush is masterful in explaining triggers and putting forth tools without the usual paragraphs of verbiage that weigh down books of this sort. Hawn uses scientific principles to help parents and children develop mindful awareness and live in the present moment. While she writes from experience and from the heart, Hawn spends too much time justifying the approach and lingering on personal experiences. Her advice is still worthwhile as she helps parents model kindness and express authentic sadness, empathy, and optimism. Adults and children will be well served by both of these titles. Kirkus Reviews
Beloved actress demonstrates how a few minutes per day can change the way we see the world. Following on the heels of her bestselling memoir, Hawn (A Lotus Grows in the Mud, 2005) shares the success of MindUP, a social and emotional learning program developed by her Hawn Foundation with the support of experts and used in elementary schools. She describes MindUP as a program that teaches children the mechanics of their own brain, allowing "them to become more self-aware and…to manage and reduce their own stress. It effectively puts them in control of the way they respond to the outside world." These tools have resulted in a positive change in the way children, as well as adults, perceive how their brains influence their lives. Hawn shares personal anecdotes that illustrate the MindUP theory in action, juxtaposed against scientific evidence and practical exercises. She instructs readers on how to find "teachable moments to share discoveries—at the dinner table, in the car, or on the way to school—whenever and wherever it feels appropriate." Decent advice for young children; some adaptations for teens would be beneficial.

I'm a grandmother; no children at home. Recently saw Goldie Hawn on the Dr. Oz show discussing her book and really wanted to read it even though it is directed toward parenting. My childhood was based on "old school" upbringing; some bad, some good. I found the book to be well researched and documented and am now reading it a second time. The suggestions offered by Ms. Hawn caused me to be reflective of my own life, past and present -- VERY helpful in moving forward, even at this late age. I highly recommend this book to any gender, any age, who would like to better their lifestyle and become a happier, more content individual. What better example than Goldie herself?

This book is very commendable for it instills a lot of lessons for us adults in our day to day life. I started reading it and instantly loved it which explains why my wife is reading it now because of the life-changing results that it will contribute to your relationship with your children.

After hearing Goldie speak on talk shows over the years, I was always impressed by her healthy attitude about life and living. As soon as I heard about this book I jumped on Amazon to order. I can't say it better than the other reviews so far. Natural joy is something so worth working on and if we can help our children come about this in their every day living by getting used to a few methods then nothing can be more important. It is clear that happiness is disappearing in the United States, maybe, in my opinion, we've grown too used to being a bit spoiled and feeling entitled. "Positive psychology", better than focusing on negative aspects, has to be more beneficial to all and training the young from the get-go can't be a better way to form a healthy, happy human being. Optimism, yes! How would you prefer to live, positive or negative? Goldie is a "Gold Mine" in her being.

This book gives you the background to gain mindfulness in your and your children's lives. It provides step by step features as to how it can be obtained. Goldie Hawn may be remembered as the ditzy blonde in movies but she is one intelligent lady who wants the best for her family and others. This is a very insightful read.
