Overview

This book is dedicated to the nurses and attendants of our hospitals.
After spending some 100 hours in a South Shore Emergency Ward, the author was so impressed by what she saw that she decided to write about it the moment she was wheeled in a private room, while all was fresh in her mind, so that she could later re-read and re-live the courage, empathy and hope that she had witnessed in this Ward. That was in July 1993.
Things might have changed in the meantime, since many nurses were forced to leave and the ones working in emergency wards now are overworked and stressed and may not always appear to have so much empathy and personal attention for patients. However, I know deep inside, that their professionalism is intact and that their compassion and empathy is always there.
This essay is my tribute to them.
