Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
There are several board books that feature major cities or places like this one and they may not have a lot of appeal beyond their own part of the country. The featured city in this one is Boston. There is no text, just a number on the spread and a picture. So for number one there is a ship on the opposing page. For the number three there appears that number of people in a boat that has a big swan on the back. The number five shows sports related items—soccer ball, baseball, football, basketball, and hockey stick. For nine there is a mother duck and a bunch of ducklings behind her and ten shows a skyline with fireworks soaring overhead. What does it all mean? The details are provided in the final spread, but unless you really know Boston you will need to read this section first to be able to explain to a toddler what he or she is looking at. For example, the sports gear represents the five teams in Boston—New England Revolution (soccer), Boston Red Sox (baseball), New England Patriots (football), Boston Celtics (basketball) and the Boston Bruins (hockey). The text is printed in both Spanish and English. Part of the "Cool Counting Books" series. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
